Politics – Rahul Gandhi Targets Assam CM Over Land Policy Allegations
Politics – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday intensified his criticism of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging serious irregularities in land allocation and accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership of enabling large-scale transfers of land to corporate groups.

Allegations Over Land Distribution
Speaking at an election rally in Bokajan, where he campaigned for Congress candidate Raton Engti, Gandhi claimed that the state government had handed over vast stretches of land to a few major business entities. According to him, approximately 98,400 bighas of land had been transferred to three prominent corporate houses.
He alleged that these lands were taken away from local residents and described the situation as deeply unfair. Gandhi further argued that top BJP leaders, including the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister, were complicit in what he termed a system that prioritises corporate interests over the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Strong Words Against State Leadership
During his address, Gandhi described Sarma as one of the most corrupt leaders in the country and said accountability would follow if the Congress returns to power. He maintained that legal proceedings would be initiated and suggested that the current leadership’s confidence would diminish once investigations begin.
His remarks reflect a broader political strategy by the Congress to highlight governance issues and alleged misuse of public resources ahead of upcoming elections in the region.
Tribute to Cultural Legacy
Gandhi also referred to the late musician Garg, who passed away in Singapore last year. He spoke about the artist’s contribution to Assam’s cultural identity, noting that Garg represented unity across communities, languages, and traditions.
He emphasised that figures like Garg symbolise the inclusive and diverse heritage of Assam, contrasting this with what he described as divisive political approaches. Gandhi added that justice related to the musician’s death would be pursued within 100 days if his party assumes power.
Focus on Decentralisation and Autonomy
Highlighting policy differences, Gandhi stated that the Congress supports decentralised governance, while accusing the BJP of centralising decision-making in New Delhi. He said that local communities should have greater control over their own affairs.
In this context, he reiterated the party’s commitment to fully implementing Article 244(A) of the Constitution. This provision allows for greater autonomy in certain tribal regions, including Karbi Anglong and other Sixth Schedule areas. Gandhi said this would ensure that governance reflects local needs and priorities.
Concerns Over Trade Policies
The Congress leader also raised concerns about India’s trade engagement with the United States. He argued that recent developments have placed India at a disadvantage by reducing tariffs on American goods and opening domestic markets in ways that could impact local industries.
According to Gandhi, such policies may weaken domestic economic resilience and affect small businesses and farmers, who form a significant part of the country’s economic structure.
Political Context Ahead of Elections
Gandhi’s remarks come at a time when political activity in Assam is intensifying, with parties seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of key electoral contests. His speech combined criticism of the current administration with promises of policy changes, reflecting an effort to appeal to both local concerns and broader national issues.
As the campaign progresses, responses from the ruling party and further developments around these allegations are expected to shape the political narrative in the state.
