Accident – Priest Dies After Bus Collision on Mumbai Link Road
Accident – A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 55-year-old priest on Thursday afternoon after a collision involving a public transport bus in Mumbai’s Kurla area. The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and traffic management in busy urban corridors.

Fatal Collision on Santacruz-Chembur Link Road
According to police officials, the victim, identified as Trivikram Shripad Acharya, was riding his scooter along the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road when the accident occurred around 12:30 pm. Acharya, a resident of Nehru Nagar in Kurla West, was reportedly struck by an electric BEST bus under circumstances that are still being examined.
Authorities stated that the force of the collision caused him to lose control and fall onto the road. In a devastating turn, the rear wheels of the bus ran over him, leading to severe injuries. He was declared dead at the scene, leaving bystanders shocked and shaken by the sudden and tragic event.
Driver Detained, Probe Underway
Following the incident, the bus driver, identified as 42-year-old Kamlesh Kumar Baranlal, was taken into custody by the Kurla Police. A case has been registered against him on charges related to causing death due to negligence.
Officials clarified that there were no immediate signs indicating alcohol consumption by the driver at the time of the accident. However, as per standard procedure, a medical examination was conducted. Investigators are now working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the collision.
Police sources indicated that witness statements, along with technical analysis of the vehicle and road conditions, will be crucial in determining accountability. Authorities are also reviewing whether factors such as traffic flow, road design, or visibility played a role in the fatal mishap.
Separate Incident Raises Fresh Concerns
Earlier on the same day, another incident involving a BEST bus occurred in the Prabhadevi area, though it did not result in any injuries. The event, which took place at approximately 7:49 am near the Bombay Dyeing bus stop, highlighted the potential risks faced by commuters during peak hours.
The bus, operating on route 167 between P.K. Kurne Chowk and Prabhadevi railway station, reportedly lost control after a car made a sudden U-turn in front of it. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the driver applied brakes abruptly. This maneuver caused the vehicle to swerve and climb onto a road divider.
While passengers on board experienced a moment of panic, no one was injured. The situation was quickly brought under control, preventing what could have escalated into a serious accident.
Growing Focus on Urban Traffic Safety
These two incidents occurring within hours of each other have drawn attention to the challenges of managing traffic in densely populated areas like Mumbai. With increasing vehicular movement and limited road space, even minor errors can lead to severe consequences.
Experts have long emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, better driver training, and improved road infrastructure to minimize accidents. Sudden maneuvers such as abrupt U-turns and speeding in congested zones continue to pose risks to both drivers and pedestrians.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting thorough investigations and implementing necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
