Politics – AAP Warns of Boycott Over MLAs’ Suspension in Delhi Assembly
Politics – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has indicated it may stay away from the upcoming Budget session of the Delhi Assembly if the suspension of four of its legislators is not withdrawn. Leader of Opposition Atishi raised the issue on Sunday, expressing concern over what she described as a pattern of unfair treatment towards the Opposition since the constitution of the Eighth Assembly.
Concerns Over Democratic Functioning of the House
Atishi emphasized that the functioning of the Assembly should reflect democratic principles, where both the ruling party and the Opposition actively contribute. In her communication to the Speaker, she pointed out that the position carries the responsibility of ensuring impartial conduct of proceedings. According to her, the current approach has raised questions about whether established parliamentary norms are being followed.
She underlined that legislative bodies are not meant to operate solely as platforms for the government. Instead, they are institutions where dialogue, debate, and scrutiny form the foundation of governance. The Opposition, she noted, plays a critical role in highlighting public concerns and holding the government accountable when necessary.
Allegations of Unprecedented Action Against Opposition
Highlighting recent developments, Atishi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the suspension of Opposition members. She argued that removing the entire Opposition from the Assembly, including its leader, for raising issues of public importance undermines the dignity of the institution.
She further stated that such actions are without precedent in India’s legislative history. According to her, no similar instance has occurred in any state legislature or even in Parliament, where all Opposition members were not only barred from proceedings but also denied access to the Assembly premises for the duration of a session.
Questions Over Rights of Elected Representatives
Atishi also raised concerns about the rights and privileges of elected representatives. She described the restrictions imposed on suspended legislators as unjustified and inconsistent with democratic values. Preventing elected members from entering the Assembly premises, she said, amounts to a violation of their अधिकार and undermines the mandate given to them by voters.
Her remarks reflect a broader concern within the party that the Opposition’s role is being curtailed, potentially affecting the balance required for effective governance.
Budget Utilisation Comes Under Scrutiny
Separately, Congress leader Devender Yadav criticized the Delhi government over its handling of budget allocations. He claimed that a significant portion of the funds earmarked for various schemes remained unspent.
According to Yadav, out of a total allocation of ₹57,850 crore, only ₹33,234 crore was utilised, leaving a substantial amount unused. He also raised questions about the government’s borrowing plans and pointed to what he described as gaps between announced promises and their implementation.

The developments signal rising tensions in the Delhi Assembly ahead of the Budget session. With the Opposition threatening a boycott and the government facing criticism over financial management, the upcoming proceedings are likely to be closely watched.
