Defense – Saudi Forces Intercept Additional Drones Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
Defense – Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence announced that its air defence systems successfully intercepted several more unmanned aerial vehicles targeting locations in the country’s eastern region. The development comes shortly after the military reported destroying a larger group of drones earlier, highlighting the ongoing security concerns surrounding critical energy infrastructure in the kingdom.
Additional Drone Interceptions Reported in Eastern Region
In a series of official updates posted on the social media platform X, the Saudi defence ministry confirmed that two drones were detected and neutralized over the vast Empty Quarter desert. According to the ministry, the unmanned aircraft were heading toward the Shaybah oil field, one of the country’s major energy production sites, before being intercepted by Saudi forces.
Officials stated that the swift action prevented potential damage to the facility and ensured the safety of nearby operations. The ministry later added that two more drones were also brought down in the eastern part of the country as defence systems continued to monitor the situation.
Earlier reports from the ministry had indicated that a total of 18 drones were intercepted over eastern territories, suggesting a coordinated attempt to target key locations within Saudi Arabia.

As security developments unfolded, diplomatic activity among major global players also increased. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan to address the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East.
According to a statement released by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both ministers stressed the importance of preventing further escalation and called for broader cooperation among international stakeholders. The conversation reportedly focused on the need for collective diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the region and avoiding a wider conflict.

United States Warns Against External Involvement
The diplomatic exchanges came shortly after comments from the United States regarding the ongoing crisis in West Asia. During a briefing at the Pentagon, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth cautioned Russia against becoming directly involved in the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Hegseth referenced a recent phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the defense secretary, the conversation included discussions about potential opportunities for peace related to the war in Ukraine while also addressing concerns surrounding developments in Iran.
He indicated that Washington believes Russia should avoid playing a role in the escalating tensions linked to the Iran situation.
Kremlin Describes Trump–Putin Call as Constructive
The Kremlin later confirmed that the conversation between the two leaders had taken place. Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described the discussion as open and constructive, suggesting that the leaders addressed several international issues during their exchange.
Reports indicated that President Trump initiated the call to discuss global developments, including the situation involving Iran and the possibility of broader diplomatic discussions between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.
Officials noted that both sides exchanged views on multiple geopolitical matters while keeping communication channels open.

Following his conversation with the US president, Russian President Vladimir Putin also held talks with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.
According to statements from the Kremlin, the leaders discussed the growing tensions across the Middle East and the potential consequences for regional stability. Russian officials attributed the current escalation to recent military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
