Accident – Contractor Arrested After Biker Dies in Uncovered Janakpuri Pit
Accident – A contractor associated with the Delhi Jal Board has been arrested by Delhi Police following the death of a 25-year-old motorcyclist who fell into a deep, uncovered construction pit in the Janakpuri area of west Delhi. The arrest comes more than a month after the fatal incident, which raised serious concerns about safety measures at construction sites across the city.

Contractor Arrested in Rajasthan
Police officials confirmed that the main contractor, Himanshu Gupta, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning in Udaipur, Rajasthan. According to investigators, Gupta was responsible for the construction work in the area where the accident took place. Authorities tracked his location after conducting a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A senior police officer said the arrest was made as part of an ongoing investigation into negligence related to the construction site. Officials are examining whether proper safety precautions, including covering or barricading the pit, were ignored.
Fatal Incident Occurred During Late-Night Commute
The accident happened on the night between February 5 and February 6 when Kamal Dhyani, a 25-year-old resident of Kailashpuri, was returning home after finishing his shift at a private bank’s call centre in Rohini. Dhyani was travelling on his motorcycle when he encountered the uncovered pit, estimated to be around 15 feet deep.
Without any protective barricade or warning signs, the biker reportedly fell directly into the excavation site. The incident occurred in a poorly lit area, making the hazard difficult to notice while riding at night.
Eyewitness Describes the Moment of the Accident
An eyewitness, Vipin Singh, later told investigators that he was driving back to his home in Sagarpur after attending a family wedding in Rohini when he noticed the motorcycle suddenly disappear into the pit.
Singh said he stopped his vehicle and approached the location to understand what had happened. Realising the seriousness of the situation, he alerted a nearby guard about the accident. The guard then contacted Yogesh, a labourer working under the contractor at the construction site.
Labourer Saw Biker Trapped in Pit
When Yogesh arrived at the location and looked inside the pit, he noticed that the motorcycle’s headlight was still switched on. This indicated that the rider was trapped inside the excavation.
Mobile phone records reviewed during the investigation show that at approximately 12:22 am, Yogesh called his employer, Prajapati, to inform him about the situation. Prajapati reportedly arrived at the spot in his car around 15 to 20 minutes later.
However, according to police findings, neither Yogesh nor Prajapati immediately contacted emergency services or informed the police about the incident, despite knowing that the biker was stuck inside the pit.
Police Informed Several Hours Later
Authorities only became aware of the accident later in the morning. Around 8 am, a Police Control Room (PCR) call was received reporting the incident. After receiving the alert, police teams rushed to the site and began investigating the circumstances that led to the biker’s death.
The delay in reporting the accident is also being examined as part of the investigation. Officials are reviewing whether timely action could have helped rescue the victim sooner.
Investigation Focuses on Safety Lapses
The case has drawn attention to safety practices at urban construction sites. Investigators are assessing whether the pit was left open without proper barricades, warning signs, or lighting—measures that are typically required to prevent accidents.
Police said the arrest of the contractor is part of efforts to establish accountability for the incident. Further legal proceedings and investigation are expected to determine the extent of negligence involved.
Authorities have also indicated that additional individuals linked to the construction work may be questioned as the case continues.
