Golf – Indian Golfers Advance as Leaders Set Fast Pace in Kenya and California
Golf – Indian golfers delivered steady performances to progress beyond the halfway stage at the 2026 Magical Kenya Open, while dramatic scoring unfolded at The Genesis Invitational in California.

Indians Safely Through in Nairobi
At the Karen Country Club in Nairobi, Veer Ahlawat continued his consistent run with rounds of 67 and 67 to move to six under par after two days. The 29-year-old, who competed through the full DP World Tour season last year, mixed five birdies with two bogeys in his second round to sit tied 28th at the midway mark.
Shubhankar Sharma ensured his weekend participation with a determined second-round effort. After a modest opening round, Sharma carded a five-under 65 that featured six birdies against a lone bogey. His two-day total of four under par placed him tied 55th, narrowly inside the projected cut line.
Yuvraj Sandhu, however, fell short despite posting rounds of 69 and 71. His level-par effort was not enough to extend his stay in the tournament.
Lacroix and Jarvis Share the Lead
France’s Frederic Lacroix surged into contention with a sparkling 62 in the second round, matching South Africa’s Casey Jarvis at 13 under par. The duo established a two-shot cushion over the chasing pack heading into the weekend.
Lacroix built on his opening 65, which ended with an eagle, by collecting four birdies on each nine during a near-flawless display. Jarvis maintained his position with steady play, keeping pressure on the leaderboard.
South African Hennie Du Plessis delivered the round of the day with a remarkable 61. The score would have set a course record if not for preferred lies being in effect at Karen Country Club. Du Plessis moved into a tie for third alongside Spain’s Angel Ayora and Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia.
Gouveia returned a blemish-free 65, while Ayora matched that number with seven birdies. The Spaniard later said he felt confident both off the tee and on the greens, crediting improved putting for his strong showing.
Local interest remained high as Kenya’s Njoroge Kibugu thrilled home supporters by securing his place for the weekend with an eagle on the closing hole.
Strong Indian Presence at The Genesis Invitational
Across the Atlantic at The Riviera Country Club in California, three players of Indian origin progressed beyond the cut at The Genesis Invitational, the second Signature Event of the PGA Tour season.
Aaron Rai, who had opened with a 66 to break into the top 10, followed with a 70 to stand tied 12th. His second round included five birdies offset by four bogeys. Akshay Bhatia posted rounds of 68 and 71 to reach three under par, placing him tied 21st.
Sahith Theegala, competing on a Charlie Sifford exemption from tournament host Tiger Woods, signed for rounds of 70 and 71 to sit tied 33rd. Theegala recorded three birdies against two bogeys in his second outing.
Penge and Bridgeman Set the Pace in California
England’s Marco Penge and American Jacob Bridgeman produced matching seven-under 64s to share the halfway lead at 12 under par. Rory McIlroy remained within striking distance after rounds of 66 and 65, carrying just one bogey through 36 holes — a sharp contrast to his struggles the previous week at Pebble Beach.
Penge’s finish was particularly impressive, with five birdies across his final seven holes. The performance came amid significant personal milestones, as his family prepares for a move to Florida and the arrival of their second child.
Bridgeman closed strongly as well, birdieing his final three holes, including a precise five-iron approach to eight feet on the last.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler faced a tense battle to make the cut. After completing a rain-delayed opening round in 74, Scheffler rallied with a 68 to reach even par, which proved to be the cut line. It marked the third consecutive week he failed to break par in the opening round, though he recovered in time to extend his campaign.
With tight leaderboards in both Nairobi and California, the weekend promises further shifts as contenders vie for momentum in two prominent events on the global golf calendar.
