Ranji Trophy – Shami’s Eight-Wicket Masterclass Powers Bengal in Semi-Final

Ranji Trophy –  Mohammed Shami delivered one of the most remarkable spells of his domestic career, claiming eight wickets to steer Bengal into a commanding position against Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 semi-final. The experienced fast bowler’s effort at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground turned the contest firmly in his side’s favor and drew praise from former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan.

Ranji trophy shami eight wicket spell

Shami’s figures of 8 for 90 marked his best return in first-class cricket, underlining his impact in a high-stakes encounter. His disciplined line and ability to extract movement with the new ball set the tone early in the innings.

Strong Start With the New Ball

Opening the bowling, Shami struck twice in quick succession to remove both Jammu and Kashmir openers. Using a blend of pace and swing, he consistently troubled the batters, rarely allowing them to settle. His sharp spells ensured that Bengal maintained control throughout the morning session.

The right-arm pacer reached his five-wicket milestone in the 59th over when he dismissed Kanhaiya Wadhwan, who had looked comfortable at the crease. That breakthrough halted any hopes of a significant lower-order resistance and further strengthened Bengal’s grip on the match.

Career-Best Figures Seal Dominance

Shami continued his relentless attack deep into the innings. In the 77th over, he claimed his eighth wicket by dismissing fast bowler Aaqib Nabi, wrapping up a memorable bowling display. The 8/90 return not only dismantled Jammu and Kashmir’s batting lineup but also stood out as the best performance of his red-ball career.

His efforts helped Bengal secure a slender 26-run first-innings lead. Though the margin was modest, it proved crucial in a tightly contested semi-final.

Irfan Pathan Applauds Commitment

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan acknowledged Shami’s achievement on social media, highlighting the pacer’s dedication to domestic cricket. While international attention remains focused on the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, Pathan noted that one of India’s premier fast bowlers was quietly delivering a match-defining spell in the Ranji Trophy.

The recognition reflects Shami’s continued influence in the domestic arena, even as he remains outside India’s current limited-overs plans.

Consistent Form in Ranji Trophy Season

This performance adds to an impressive Ranji campaign for the 35-year-old. Earlier in the season, he picked up five wickets against Services, finishing with figures of 5 for 51 in the second innings of that match. Across seven appearances this season, Shami has claimed 38 wickets, including three five-wicket hauls.

Such numbers place him among the leading bowlers in the competition and reaffirm his value to Bengal’s pace attack. His experience and control have been central to the team’s strong run in the tournament.

International Absence Despite Success

Despite his domestic heroics, Shami has not featured regularly in India’s squad over the past year. His last appearance for the national team came during the Champions Trophy 2025, where he contributed nine wickets to help India lift the title. Since then, opportunities at the international level have been limited.

His performances in the Ranji Trophy, however, continue to demonstrate that he remains a potent force in red-ball cricket.

Semi-Final Poised for Historic Finish

While Bengal secured a first-innings advantage thanks to Shami’s spell, their batting faltered in the second innings as they were bowled out for 99. That collapse set Jammu and Kashmir a target of 126 runs.

The modest chase presents Jammu and Kashmir with a historic opportunity to reach their first Ranji Trophy final. As the semi-final heads toward its conclusion, Shami’s eight-wicket burst remains the defining moment of the match, keeping Bengal’s hopes alive in a tense and closely fought contest.
