Politics – BJP Leader Booked Over Remarks at Karur Protest
Politics – The Karur Town Police have initiated legal proceedings against Bharatiya Janata Party district president Senthil Nathan following allegations that he made inappropriate comments about Congress Member of Parliament Jothimani during a public demonstration earlier this month.

Protest Held in Karur Town
The incident stems from a protest organised on February 10 in front of the Head Post Office in Karur. The demonstration was led by the women’s wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party and focused on what party representatives described as rising injustices against women under the current DMK administration.
According to a statement from the office of the District Superintendent of Police, the protest was conducted with prior arrangements, and a sizeable gathering of party members attended. Officials estimated that more than 300 BJP functionaries and supporters participated, raising slogans to press their demands.
The programme was spearheaded by district president Senthil Nathan. Among those present were BJP State Secretary Amar Prasad Reddy and former Member of Parliament Karvendhan, both of whom attended as special invitees and addressed the gathering.
Allegations of Derogatory Speech
Police officials stated that during his address, Senthil Nathan allegedly made remarks concerning Karur MP Jothimani that were described as indecent and offensive. Authorities said the comments were considered insulting to women and potentially disruptive to public order.
Following a formal complaint lodged by Karur District Congress President Ramesh, the Karur Town Police registered a case against the BJP district president. The case has been filed under multiple sections of the law, though officials have not disclosed further details regarding the specific provisions invoked.
Law enforcement authorities indicated that an inquiry is underway and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Political Reactions Intensify
The controversy quickly drew political attention beyond the district. Speaking in Delhi, Congress MP Jothimani strongly criticised the alleged remarks, describing them as deeply offensive and unacceptable.
She said the statements amounted to a serious form of verbal abuse and expressed shock over the language reportedly used against her. According to Jothimani, no woman should have to face such comments in public life.
Broader Concerns Raised
In her response, the Congress leader suggested that the remarks reflected a larger issue concerning attitudes toward women in politics. She argued that attempts to undermine women leaders by targeting their identity rather than their work diminish public discourse.
Jothimani further alleged that such comments are used as a tactic to silence women who speak openly and challenge authority. She maintained that her professional contributions and political positions should be the basis of debate, rather than personal or gender-based criticism.
Ongoing Investigation
Police officials have reiterated that the case is being examined in accordance with established legal procedures. They emphasized that maintaining public order and ensuring respectful political engagement remain priorities.
The episode has added to the already charged political climate in the region, with leaders from both parties expected to respond in the coming days. As the investigation proceeds, authorities have urged political representatives to exercise restraint in public forums to prevent further escalation.
The development underscores the increasing scrutiny surrounding political speeches and public demonstrations, particularly when allegations of gender-based remarks arise. Observers note that such cases often spark wider conversations about standards of conduct in political discourse.
Further updates are expected as the legal process moves forward.
