In a social media post on Truth Social, Donald Trump claimed that the attack was directed against terrorists because of the reported murders of Christians.

“The United States launched a strong and lethal strike against ISIS terrorist scum in Northwest Nigeria tonight at my command as Commander in Chief. These terrorists have been killing innocent Christians at a rate not seen in many years, if not centuries! Trump said, “I have warned these terrorists before that there would be hell to pay if they did not stop the slaughter of Christians, and tonight there was.”

“Only the United States can carry out as many flawless strikes as the Department of War did. Our nation will not let radical Islamic terrorism to flourish under my leadership. The US President said, “May God bless our military and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead terrorists, of whom there will be many more if their brutality against Christians continues.”

The US National Counterterrorism Center states that “Boko Haram pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2015, creating ISIS-West Africa (ISIS-WA).” According to the United States, the branch often targets Christians, government employees, infrastructure, and civilian defense forces in addition to regional military objectives.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that earlier on December 19 (local time), US and Jordanian troops conducted extensive airstrikes against the Islamic State terror organization in Syria, hitting over 70 ISIS targets with over 100 precision-guided bombs.

CENTCOM stated in a post on X that the strikes were executed overnight and characterized the operation as an example of “peace through strength.” A video including footage of the airstrikes was also provided by the command.

Days before, in the town of Palmyra in central Syria, a convoy of US and Syrian soldiers was attacked by a suspected Islamic State assailant.
