A surprising political observation came from Tej Pratap Yadav, the elder son of veteran Bihar leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, during his recent visit to Mirzapur. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has approved an order allowing elected village pradhans to continue serving as administrators of their respective panchayats for the next six months.
The move comes as the tenure of nearly 57,000 village pradhans has reached its conclusion, while fresh elections have yet to be announced. Government sources indicate that preparations related to the caste survey and reservation-related processes are currently underway, making it difficult to conduct panchayat elections in the immediate future.
Officials also point out that the state is moving closer to the next Assembly election cycle, which has added to scheduling challenges. In previous instances when local body elections could not be conducted on time, administrative control was typically handed over to government officers such as Assistant Development Officers or Block Development Officers. The latest decision marks a different approach by allowing existing local representatives to continue managing village affairs during the interim period.
