Transport – Nearly four weeks after a key bus route was curtailed, Mumbai University has allowed the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) service on Route 318 to resume operations داخل its Vidyanagari campus in Kalina. The move restores a vital transport link between Kurla West and Santacruz East, bringing relief to hundreds of daily commuters who depend on the service.
Decision Reverses Earlier Restriction
The university administration had earlier limited the movement of Route 318 buses, directing them to operate only outside campus boundaries. This decision, taken in March, stemmed from security concerns within the campus. As a result, students and staff had to walk longer distances or seek alternative transport to reach different departments spread across the large Vidyanagari complex.
With the latest development, buses will once again pass through the campus, significantly improving internal connectivity. Officials indicated that the restoration followed a review of the situation after the concerns that prompted the restriction were addressed.
Key Route for Daily Campus Movement
Route 318 has long served as an essential transport option within the university premises. The Vidyanagari campus spans a vast area, housing multiple faculties, administrative offices, and research centers. For many students, particularly those attending back-to-back lectures in different departments, the internal bus route has been a practical and time-saving option.
The temporary diversion created logistical challenges. Many commuters reported delays and inconvenience, especially during peak academic hours. The return of the service is expected to ease these issues and restore smoother daily routines.
Security Concerns Linked to Protest
The earlier suspension of the internal route was linked to a prolonged protest staged by a former research scholar, Rajesh Balkhande. He had been holding a sit-in within the campus, reportedly raising concerns about the unaided status of a department. The university administration cited safety considerations as the reason for limiting bus access within the campus during that period.
The presence of the protest and related tensions led authorities to adopt precautionary measures, including restricting vehicle movement in certain areas.
Court Intervention Leads to Resolution
The situation eventually saw intervention from the Bombay High Court, which directed the protester to vacate the premises. Following compliance with the court’s instructions, the campus environment returned to normal, paving the way for reconsideration of earlier restrictions.
University Registrar Prasad Karande confirmed that the BEST authorities have been informed about the decision to resume full operations. He noted that necessary procedures are underway and that the service will soon function as it did before the disruption.
Plans to Improve Campus Transport
Alongside restoring the bus route, the university is also looking to upgrade its internal transport infrastructure. During a recent budget discussion, officials revealed plans to introduce battery-operated vehicles within the campus. These eco-friendly options are expected to provide an additional mode of transportation for students and staff.
An allocation of approximately Rs 30 lakh has reportedly been set aside for acquiring around five such vehicles. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable and efficient mobility solutions within educational institutions.
