RailwaySafety – Indian Railways Reports Major Decline in Train Accidents
RailwaySafety – Indian Railways has recorded a significant improvement in operational safety over the past decade, with official figures showing a sharp reduction in consequential train accidents compared to earlier years. Railway authorities said the decline reflects continued investment in safety systems, monitoring mechanisms, and passenger awareness initiatives across the national rail network.

Accident Numbers Show Steady Improvement
According to Railway Ministry officials, only 14 consequential train accidents were reported during the 2025-26 financial year up to February 28. In comparison, the network had recorded 135 such incidents during 2014-15. Officials stated that the latest figures indicate a reduction of nearly 90 percent over the period.
Railway authorities also noted that recent fire-related incidents in trains and railway premises were handled quickly without causing casualties. Minor fire events reported in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday and Bihar on Monday were brought under control through emergency response systems already in place within the railway network.
Central Monitoring System Operating Round the Clock
Senior officials said a dedicated control centre continues to function at Rail Bhawan under the supervision of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The facility reportedly tracks accidents and operational incidents in real time while also managing crowd movement during major festivals and peak travel periods.
Officials added that the monitoring unit has become an important part of railway operations, particularly at stations that regularly witness heavy passenger traffic. The ministry confirmed that investigations have been ordered into the recent fire incidents despite the limited damage caused.
Comparative Data Highlights Long-Term Changes
Railway statistics released by the ministry showed that between 2004-05 and 2013-14, the national railway network witnessed 1,711 consequential train accidents. These incidents led to 904 passenger deaths and injuries to more than 3,100 individuals.
By comparison, the period from 2014-15 to 2023-24 saw 678 consequential accidents, resulting in 748 deaths and over 2,000 injuries. Officials said the reduction reflects the impact of upgraded technology, improved maintenance procedures, and stronger monitoring systems introduced over recent years.
The safety trend improved further during 2024-25, when only 31 consequential accidents were recorded. Those incidents resulted in 18 deaths and 92 injuries. During the current financial year up to February 2026, the Railways reported 16 deaths and 28 injuries linked to 14 consequential accidents.
Safety Spending Witnesses Significant Increase
Government expenditure on railway safety projects has risen sharply during the last several years. Official data showed that Rs 1,20,389 crore has been allocated for safety-related work during 2026-27.
The allocation marks a substantial increase from Rs 39,200 crore spent in 2013-14. Railway safety expenditure also stood at Rs 87,336 crore in 2022-23, while allocations increased to Rs 1,01,662 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 1,17,693 crore in 2025-26.
Officials said the funds are being used for track upgrades, signalling improvements, modern monitoring systems, fire protection equipment, and maintenance infrastructure aimed at reducing operational risks.
Fire Prevention Measures Expanded Across Coaches
Railway authorities said several preventive measures have been introduced to reduce fire-related risks during train operations. Fire safety notices are now displayed inside coaches to improve passenger awareness regarding prohibited activities and emergency response practices.
In addition, information posters explaining fire prevention guidelines have been installed in coaches throughout the railway network. Officials stated that newly manufactured pantry cars and power cars are now being equipped with fire detection and suppression systems.
The Railways has also started fitting newly built passenger coaches with advanced smoke and fire detection technology as part of its broader safety modernisation programme.
Property Damage Still Remains a Concern
Despite the improvement in accident figures, railway property damage continues to result in financial losses. Data released by the ministry estimated damage to railway property between 2020-21 and 2024-25 at Rs 432.91 crore.
Officials, however, maintained that the continued rise in safety investments and faster emergency response systems are helping reduce the impact of operational incidents across the railway network.
