PoliticalProbe – Former Arambagh Civic Chief Arrested in Solar Project Investigation
PoliticalProbe – The investigation into the alleged Green City solar power project irregularities took a significant turn after Hooghly Rural Police arrested Swapan Kumar Nandi, a former chairman of Arambagh Municipality and a leader associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Authorities confirmed that the arrest was made as part of an ongoing probe into claims of financial misconduct linked to the solar energy initiative.

Arrest Linked to Ongoing Inquiry
Police officials stated that Nandi was taken into custody following developments in the investigation surrounding the Green City solar power project. The case has been under scrutiny for some time, with investigators examining various aspects of the project and the individuals connected to it. Authorities indicated that the inquiry remains active and additional steps could be taken depending on the findings.
Nandi’s arrest has generated attention across the Hooghly district due to his previous role in municipal administration and his political association with the state’s ruling party.
Authorities Continue Examining Project Records
Investigators are working to determine the extent of the alleged fraud and identify any possible violations connected to the project. Officials have not disclosed detailed findings at this stage, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. They have, however, emphasized that all relevant documents and evidence are being reviewed carefully.
No immediate response was available from either Swapan Kumar Nandi or representatives of the Trinamool Congress regarding the arrest.
CID Search at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata Residence
In a separate development, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a search operation at the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata.
According to statements issued by party leaders, police personnel arrived at the residence during the early hours of Saturday. Party representatives claimed that disaster management personnel were later brought in to assist in opening locked sections of the property before investigators began their search.
TMC Leaders Criticize Search Operation
Several Trinamool Congress leaders strongly criticized the action. Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose alleged that the search yielded no incriminating material and described the operation as politically motivated. Similar remarks were made by party MP Kirti Azad, who cited the reported seizure record and claimed that investigators did not recover any evidence during the search.
The party maintained that the action was aimed at exerting pressure on opposition leaders. Officials involved in the investigation have not publicly commented on those allegations.
Signature Forgery Case Under Investigation
The search operation is linked to a signature forgery case currently being investigated by the CID. A day before the search, Abhishek Banerjee appeared before investigators at the agency’s headquarters in Kolkata’s Alipore area. Officials questioned him for nearly five and a half hours regarding matters connected to the case.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed further details about the evidence collected or the next course of action.
FIR Registered Against Mamata Banerjee
Meanwhile, another political development emerged after Kolkata Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The case was filed at Hare Street Police Station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The complaint, submitted by Tushar Kanti Das, alleged that a speech delivered by Banerjee on March 9 contained remarks that could potentially disturb public order and communal harmony. The complaint further claimed that the speech had the potential to affect peace and stability within the state.
Authorities have not announced any further action in the matter, and the legal process is expected to proceed according to established procedures.
