Rajya Sabha Reconstitutes Key Parliamentary Committee

The Rajya Sabha Secretariat issued an official notification confirming the appointment after Chairman CP Radhakrishnan approved a new composition of the committee. The revised panel came into effect from May 20, according to the notification released by the Upper House.

Raghav Chadha, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party after leaving the Aam Aadmi Party, will now lead the parliamentary body responsible for examining petitions submitted by citizens and organizations regarding public issues and legislative matters.

The Committee on Petitions plays an important role in reviewing public grievances and recommendations presented before Parliament. It also studies concerns raised by individuals and groups on matters linked to governance and policy implementation.

Ten Members Included in the Newly Formed Panel

Along with Chadha, the Rajya Sabha chairman nominated ten other members to serve on the committee. The newly constituted panel includes Harsh Mahajan, Gulam Ali, Shambhu Sharan Patel, Mayankkumar Nayak, Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha, Jebi Mather Hisham, Subhasish Khuntia, Rwngwra Narzary and Sandosh Kumar P.

The restructuring of parliamentary committees is a routine process carried out periodically to ensure smooth functioning of legislative work in both Houses of Parliament. These committees examine issues in detail and submit recommendations to the government and Parliament.

Parliamentary observers note that committee assignments are considered significant because they allow lawmakers to participate directly in policy discussions and administrative review processes outside regular House proceedings.

Separate Nomination Announced for Corporate Laws Panel

In a separate notification issued by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Dr Menaka Guruswamy was nominated to the Joint Committee examining the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The notification stated that the nomination was approved by the Rajya Sabha Chairman on May 20. The joint committee has been tasked with reviewing the proposed amendments related to corporate legislation before the bill proceeds further in the parliamentary process.

Joint committees generally include members from both Houses of Parliament and are formed to conduct detailed examinations of important legislative proposals. Their recommendations often influence the final shape of bills before they are debated and passed.

Focus on Parliamentary Functioning

The latest appointments come at a time when parliamentary committees continue to play a crucial role in legislative scrutiny and governance oversight. Such panels often function beyond public attention but are regarded as essential mechanisms for detailed examination of laws, public policy and citizen concerns.

With the new appointments now in effect, the committees are expected to begin their work on pending petitions and legislative matters in the coming weeks as Parliament prepares for upcoming sessions and policy discussions.
