Parliament – Lok Sabha to Consider Key Bills as Monsoon Session Continues
Parliament – The Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to witness another important day of legislative activity as both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha prepare to deliberate on several significant Bills on Friday. Among the major proposals scheduled for discussion are amendments related to the registration of births and deaths, the strength of Supreme Court judges, and reforms concerning the micro, small and medium enterprises sector. Both Houses are scheduled to begin their proceedings at 11 a.m.
Lok Sabha to Discuss Two Major Amendment Bills
In the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to introduce the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 for consideration and passage. The proposed legislation aims to introduce further changes to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, updating the existing legal framework governing civil registration across the country.
The Lower House will also examine the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026. Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal is scheduled to move the legislation for discussion and approval. The Bill seeks to amend the law governing the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court.
Parliamentary Reports and Committee Business
Before taking up legislative matters, ministers will place several official documents before the House. Members will also receive reports prepared by the Standing Committee on Rural Development and Panchayati Raj as part of the day’s parliamentary business.
Another item listed on the Lok Sabha agenda is a motion requesting additional time for the Joint Committee examining three important legislative proposals. These include the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The extension would allow the committee more time to complete and submit its report.
Rajya Sabha to Take Up MSME Reform Bill
The Rajya Sabha is expected to focus on the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi will move the Bill for discussion and passage in the Upper House. The proposed amendment is intended to revise provisions of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, with the objective of updating the legal framework governing the MSME sector.
Apart from legislative work, the Upper House will also hear statements from ministers regarding the implementation of recommendations submitted by various Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees. These statements are intended to provide updates on the progress made in acting upon parliamentary recommendations across different ministries.
Bills Cleared During Previous Sitting
Parliament has already recorded notable legislative progress during the current session. On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha approved the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, a day after it had been passed by the Lok Sabha. The legislation was cleared despite Opposition members walking out of the House during the voting process.
The Lok Sabha also passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 through a voice vote. The Bill proposes to classify any deliberate obstruction or insult to the National Song, “Vande Mataram,” as a criminal offence. The legislation was approved after a brief discussion that took place amid protests by Opposition members. The Rajya Sabha had already passed the Bill during its previous sitting.
