Trade – India Pushes Integrated Strategy to Boost Sustainable Global Competitiveness
Trade –Trade and sustainable development are becoming increasingly interconnected, prompting India to strengthen its policy framework and industry preparedness for evolving international market requirements.
Trade and sustainable development should no longer be viewed as separate policy areas, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said while stressing the need for a coordinated strategy that brings together trade, industry, sustainability, and competitiveness. Speaking at a government-organised workshop, he said businesses must be supported through an enabling ecosystem that encourages the adoption of sustainable practices as environmental regulations become a permanent feature of global commerce.
Sustainability Rules Reshaping International Trade
Agrawal pointed out that sustainability-focused regulations and unilateral environmental measures are now influencing international trade in significant ways. He said adapting to these changes at an early stage would help Indian industries remain competitive while improving the country’s ability to respond to shifting global trade requirements.
According to him, building strong domestic capabilities today will position India more effectively in future trade negotiations and strengthen its standing in international markets where sustainability standards are increasingly becoming part of commercial agreements.
Experts Discuss India’s Future Trade Preparedness
The Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry organised a day-long workshop that brought together senior government officials, trade negotiators, industry representatives, academics, legal experts and policy researchers. The event focused on examining how international trade policies are increasingly linked with sustainable development objectives.
Participants discussed ways to make better use of India’s ongoing domestic initiatives so the country can prepare for emerging sustainability-related trade rules. The deliberations also explored how these initiatives could support India’s future engagement in global trade discussions and Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
Four Key Areas Covered During Workshop
The workshop included four dedicated thematic sessions covering India’s domestic carbon framework, global developments in Trade and Sustainable Development provisions within Free Trade Agreements, the changing international carbon regulatory environment, and strategic policy options for India’s future approach to trade and sustainability.
Experts examined the growing influence of carbon markets, carbon pricing systems, carbon border adjustment mechanisms, sustainability standards and regulatory cooperation. Discussions focused on how these developments could affect India’s exports, industrial competitiveness and long-term economic growth.
Participants also considered how businesses may need to adjust to international sustainability requirements while maintaining competitiveness in global supply chains. The exchange of views highlighted the importance of coordinated policymaking across multiple sectors to address emerging trade challenges.
First Step in a Broader Consultation Process
The Commerce Ministry described the workshop as the first in a planned series of consultations aimed at strengthening India’s long-term strategy on Trade and Sustainable Development. These discussions are expected to contribute to policy formulation as global trade rules continue to evolve and negotiations on Free Trade Agreements progress.
The concluding session reviewed India’s expanding domestic sustainability framework, including the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, the Indian Carbon Market, the Extended Producer Responsibility framework and the country’s accreditation and conformity assessment ecosystem. Officials noted that strengthening these institutional mechanisms would help improve India’s readiness for future sustainability-linked trade requirements while supporting industries in meeting international expectations.
