Kerala Rainfall -Continuous heavy rainfall across Kerala has disrupted normal life, prompting authorities to suspend classes in several districts on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The decision follows warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has issued high-level weather alerts after persistent rain triggered landslides in multiple hilly regions. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious as wet weather is expected to continue in many parts of the state.
Educational Institutions Ordered to Remain Closed
District administrations have announced a holiday for schools, colleges, and various educational institutions in Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, Malappuram, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Kozhikode. The precautionary measure has been taken to ensure the safety of students and staff as heavy rainfall continues to affect transportation and increases the risk of landslides and flooding.
Landslides Reported Across Hilly Regions
Several landslides have been reported from rain-hit areas of Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta districts. In Idukki, two separate incidents occurred near Thodupuzha, including locations at Muttom Challavayal and Adoor Hill. Similar incidents were also recorded at Poonjar Payyanithottam in Kottayam and Thumbakulam in Pathanamthitta. Authorities are closely monitoring vulnerable areas where the soil has become unstable following continuous rainfall since Friday evening.
Rescue Teams Continue Search Operation
Emergency teams are searching for a woman who went missing after the landslide at Adoor Hill in Kudayathur. The missing person has been identified as Sumathi, the wife of Ravi Narayanan. Her son, Ratheesh, was rescued by local residents after sustaining injuries during the incident. Rescue personnel continue their efforts despite challenging weather conditions in the affected region.
Wayanad Announces Wider Holiday Measures
In Wayanad, the District Collector has extended the holiday to all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres, professional colleges, and special classes after the IMD issued an orange alert for the district. However, residential schools and residential colleges have been exempted from the order. Institutions currently functioning as relief camps will remain closed until further instructions are issued.
District-Wise Announcements
Kottayam District Collector Chethan Kumar Meena has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, tuition centres, special classes, and professional colleges. Authorities clarified that examinations scheduled for the day will be conducted without any change.
A similar order has been issued in Pathanamthitta, where all institutions, ranging from Anganwadis to professional colleges, will remain closed due to the continuing spell of heavy rain.
Malappuram has also suspended classes in schools, colleges, professional institutions, madrasas, and tuition centres. Officials confirmed that university examinations and Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) examinations will proceed according to the existing timetable.
In Alappuzha, educational institutions, including professional colleges, have been directed to remain closed as adverse weather conditions continue to affect the district.
Weather Alerts Remain in Force
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kottayam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Orange alerts remain in effect for Palakkad, Thrissur, and Ernakulam, while yellow alerts have been issued for Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Authorities have advised people, particularly those living in landslide-prone and hilly regions, to stay updated with official weather bulletins, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety instructions until weather conditions improve.
