Floods – Assam Flood Death Toll Climbs to 80 as Relief Support Grows
Floods – The death toll from the ongoing floods in Assam has reached 80 after two more fatalities were reported, while the disaster continues to affect thousands of families across multiple districts. According to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS) report released on July 31, more than 1.92 lakh people remain impacted as authorities continue relief and rehabilitation operations.
Fresh Casualties Reported in Two Districts
The latest DRIMS assessment confirmed that two additional deaths were recorded since the previous update. One person lost their life in Sivasagar district, while the second fatality was reported from Charaideo. Until July 30, the official death count stood at 78, taking the total number of lives lost in this year’s floods to 80.
The report identified Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Charaideo as the five districts currently facing the flood situation. Altogether, 379 villages have experienced the impact of rising water levels, affecting daily life and essential services for residents.
Thousands of Families Continue to Face Hardship
Government data showed that 1,92,799 people have been affected by the floods across the state. The disaster has also caused significant damage to agriculture, with nearly 15,430 hectares of cultivated land coming under floodwaters. Despite the widespread rural impact, officials stated that no incidents of urban flooding have been reported in any district covered by the latest assessment.
Relief agencies and local authorities are continuing efforts to provide assistance to displaced families while monitoring the changing flood conditions.
Chief Minister Acknowledges Major Financial Contribution
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked industrialist Gautam Adani for donating Rs 11 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The contribution is expected to strengthen ongoing relief and rehabilitation work for people affected by the floods.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the financial assistance would reinforce the government’s ability to support families dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. He also noted that Adani has been helping mobilise additional resources to aid relief activities on the ground.
Commitment to Transparent Relief Efforts
Expressing appreciation for the contribution, Sarma said the support reflected concern for the people of Assam during a difficult period. He assured donors that every contribution received through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund would be used responsibly, with transparency, integrity and accountability, to help affected communities recover and rebuild their lives.
The Chief Minister also extended his gratitude to Adani for standing alongside the people of the state during the ongoing crisis.
More Organisations and Individuals Extend Support
Apart from corporate contributions, actor Kartik Aaryan has donated Rs 1 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Sarma welcomed the actor’s contribution and said it would provide meaningful assistance to those struggling because of the floods.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) has also announced financial support for flood-affected residents. National Convener Shahid Sayeed said the decision was taken unanimously during an emergency meeting of the organisation’s six-member Core Team held at Kalam Bhavan in New Delhi.
According to the organisation, the assistance will be provided through the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund while additional relief initiatives will also be expanded to support affected communities. As flood recovery efforts continue, government agencies, charitable organisations and individual donors remain engaged in providing assistance to families coping with the disaster.
