Drone Ban – Delhi Enforces Temporary Flight Restrictions Ahead of Independence Day
Drone Ban – The Delhi Police has announced a temporary prohibition on the use of drones and several other low-altitude aerial platforms across the National Capital Territory as part of enhanced security preparations for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. The restrictions will remain effective from August 2 to August 16, 2026, covering the period before and shortly after the national event. Authorities said the decision is intended to strengthen public safety and safeguard important government locations during one of the country’s most significant national celebrations.
Order Issued Under BNSS Provisions
The directive has been issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. According to the official notification, intelligence assessments indicate that anti-social groups, criminal elements, or terrorist organisations could attempt to misuse aerial platforms to threaten public gatherings, senior dignitaries, or critical infrastructure. In response, police have decided to suspend the operation of such devices throughout Delhi during the notified period.
Wide Range of Flying Devices Covered
The restrictions extend beyond drones and include numerous categories of aerial equipment. These include Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), quadcopters, remotely piloted aircraft, paragliders, paramotors, hang gliders, microlight aircraft, small powered aircraft, hot air balloons, and parachute jumps conducted from aircraft. Officials have clarified that none of these platforms will be permitted to operate anywhere within the jurisdiction of the National Capital Territory while the order remains in force.
Strict Enforcement and Legal Consequences
Delhi Police has warned that anyone found violating the directive may face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Authorities have stressed that compliance with the restrictions is essential to ensure the smooth conduct of Independence Day events and to minimise any potential security risks. Law enforcement agencies will monitor the implementation of the order across the city during the entire restriction period.
Public Notification Across the Capital
Since the order affects a large section of the public, the police stated that it is not practical to serve notices individually. Instead, the notification has been issued publicly through media channels and will also be displayed at government offices and public institutions across Delhi. Copies of the order will be available at the offices of Deputy Commissioners of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police, Assistant Commissioners of Police, tehsil offices, police stations, and offices of civic agencies, including the NDMC, MCD, PWD, DDA, and the Delhi Cantonment Board.
Restrictions Effective for Fifteen Days
The notification, issued on July 31, 2026, specifies that the ban will come into effect on August 2 and continue until August 16, 2026, unless it is withdrawn before the scheduled end date. Both the starting and ending dates are included within the duration of the restrictions. During this period, authorities will maintain close surveillance across key areas of the city to prevent unauthorised aerial activity.
Security Preparations Intensify Before National Event
Every year, security arrangements in Delhi are significantly strengthened in the lead-up to Independence Day celebrations. Multiple security and intelligence agencies work together to protect citizens, visiting dignitaries, and strategically important installations, particularly around the Red Fort and other sensitive locations where official ceremonies are conducted. The temporary ban on drones and similar aerial platforms forms an important part of these precautionary measures aimed at ensuring a safe and secure environment throughout the celebrations.
