Narcotics Crackdown – Maharashtra Unveils Sweeping Strategy Against Drug Syndicates

Narcotics Crackdown –  Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at breaking the financial and operational backbone of drug trafficking networks operating across the state. The Chief Minister, who also oversees the Home Department, reaffirmed the government’s firm stance against narcotics-related crimes and outlined a series of measures designed to target organised drug syndicates.

Maharashtra strengthens drug enforcement measures

Government Defends Use of MCOCA in Drug Cases

Speaking during the Question Hour session in the Maharashtra Assembly, Fadnavis referred to the recent arrest of international drug trafficking suspect Mohammad Salim Dola, also known as Salim Ismail Dola. He defended the government’s decision to invoke the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against drug cartels, saying conventional legal provisions were often insufficient to tackle highly structured criminal organisations.

According to the Chief Minister, leaders of drug syndicates frequently exploit legal loopholes under existing narcotics laws, secure bail, and continue directing illegal operations through associates. He stressed that modern drug trafficking networks function in a manner similar to organised crime groups and therefore require stronger legal intervention.

Multi-Department Approach to Combat Drug Trade

Fadnavis said that addressing the narcotics problem requires coordinated action across several government departments rather than isolated enforcement efforts. As part of the new plan, specialised anti-drug units and expanded drug-testing infrastructure will be established at police stations in both urban and rural regions of Maharashtra.

The state government has also instructed municipal authorities and local police to remove unauthorised shops, kiosks, and illegal structures located within 100 metres of educational institutions. Officials believe such areas are often vulnerable to illicit activities and require stricter monitoring.

Focus on Technology and Public Awareness

The Cyber Department has been tasked with tracking encrypted communication channels and social media platforms that may be used for drug distribution. At the same time, the Education and Social Justice Departments will launch awareness campaigns in nearly 3,000 colleges and educational campuses to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse.

To strengthen community involvement, the government has introduced a reward programme for individuals who provide credible information about drug trafficking activities. Authorities have assured that the identity of informants will remain fully protected.

Enforcement Figures Highlight Scale of Operations

Sharing recent enforcement data, Fadnavis said that between January and April 2026, authorities registered 1,142 cases involving commercial quantities of narcotics. During the same period, 1,626 individuals were arrested and drugs valued at Rs 254.53 crore were seized.

In addition, law enforcement agencies recorded 3,199 cases related to drug consumption. The Chief Minister stated that all seven units of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force are actively operating across the state to intensify enforcement efforts.

He also revealed that during 2025, narcotics worth Rs 523.17 crore that had been seized during investigations were destroyed by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force and local police units.

Opposition Raises Questions Over Police Accountability

Opposition leaders welcomed stronger action against drug trafficking but raised concerns regarding alleged involvement of certain police personnel with criminal networks. Jayant Patil of the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) claimed that corruption and extortion by some officers were helping protect drug syndicates. He also urged the government to strengthen monitoring at key inter-state ports used for the movement of narcotics.

NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad questioned how large-scale drug operations could function without institutional support, while Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sunil Prabhu said residents had repeatedly complained about drug peddling in local communities.

Strict Action Against Errant Officers

Responding to the allegations, Fadnavis said the government would not tolerate misconduct within the police force. He stated that any officer found assisting drug traffickers or deliberately ignoring illegal activities would face dismissal from service.

The Chief Minister further announced the formation of a high-level committee to lead the Drug-Free Mumbai campaign. The committee will oversee awareness drives and coordinate efforts aimed at reducing drug abuse and strengthening preventive measures across the city.
