MumbaiRains – Intense Downpour Triggers Flooding and Disruptions Across Mumbai

MumbaiRains –  Mumbai witnessed another spell of heavy monsoon rain on Tuesday night, causing widespread water accumulation in several low-lying areas and disrupting traffic movement in parts of the city. Civic authorities were forced to temporarily shut a key underpass in Andheri after rising water levels made it unsafe for vehicles.

Mumbai downpour causes citywide flooding disruptions

The continuous rainfall affected daily movement across multiple neighborhoods, prompting officials to monitor vulnerable locations and take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.

Andheri Underpass Closed After Severe Waterlogging

According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Andheri subway had to be closed for vehicular traffic after it became submerged due to persistent rainfall. Water quickly accumulated inside the underpass, creating hazardous conditions and making passage impossible for commuters.

Authorities deployed personnel at the site to prevent vehicles from entering the flooded stretch and to ensure public safety. Barricades were placed around the affected area while officials assessed the situation.

Rainfall Levels Rise Across the City

Data released by the civic body showed that Mumbai recorded substantial rainfall throughout the day. Between 8:00 am and 11:00 pm on June 23, the city received an average of 56 mm of rain. The eastern suburbs registered 23 mm, while western suburban areas recorded 33 mm.

Rain intensity increased significantly during the late evening hours. Several locations in the western suburbs experienced notable rainfall between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm. Areas in Kandivali, Malad, Santacruz and Juhu were among those receiving some of the highest rainfall measurements during that period.

Civic Teams Continue Monitoring Flood-Prone Areas

Municipal officials stated that most transport infrastructure remained operational despite the heavy rain. Apart from the flooded Andheri underpass, other subways across the city continued to function normally. Railway services also remained largely unaffected, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters.

Officials on the ground said teams were continuously monitoring flood-prone locations and implementing safety measures where required. Efforts were focused on minimizing risk to motorists and preventing vehicles from entering dangerous stretches.

Rescue Efforts Highlight Safety Concerns

A civic official stationed near the flooded underpass said authorities have not yet identified an effective temporary solution to address the recurring waterlogging issue at the location.

The official noted that despite repeated warnings, some motorists attempted to drive through the submerged section. In one instance, an auto-rickshaw became stranded in the middle of the underpass after entering the flooded area. Municipal staff intervened and safely assisted the driver, preventing a potentially serious incident.

Another official said civic teams were working around the clock to stop vehicles from accessing the flooded passage and to ensure public safety during the ongoing spell of rain.

Waterlogging Reported in Other Areas

Heavy showers also affected several other parts of Mumbai. Reports of water accumulation emerged from locations including Everard Nagar, where another subway was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

Visuals from major roads showed motorists navigating slowly through rain-soaked streets amid reduced visibility. Waterlogged stretches were visible along sections of the Eastern Express Highway, leading drivers to exercise extra caution.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, some residents, particularly youngsters in areas such as Sion, were seen stepping outdoors to enjoy the monsoon showers. However, authorities continued to urge citizens to remain cautious and avoid flooded zones until conditions improve.
