MonsoonPreparedness – Urban Drainage Cleanup Gains Momentum Across Delhi
MonsoonPreparedness – As the monsoon season draws closer, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has reported significant progress in its large-scale drain cleaning campaign, with nearly four-fifths of the first phase completed well before the scheduled deadline of June 30. The initiative forms a key part of the city’s annual preparations aimed at reducing water accumulation and ensuring smooth movement of stormwater during heavy rainfall.

Major Drain Cleaning Nears Completion
According to figures released by the civic authority, workers have removed 1,12,053.68 metric tonnes of accumulated silt from 793 major drains measuring four feet or wider. This achievement represents 79.47 percent of the Phase-I target of 1,41,003 metric tonnes as recorded on May 19. The ongoing operation is intended to improve the carrying capacity of drainage channels before the arrival of seasonal rains.
Smaller Drains Show Almost Full Progress
The desilting work in drains measuring less than four feet has reached an advanced stage, with authorities reporting nearly complete execution. Out of the targeted 25,850.74 metric tonnes of silt removal, 25,812.99 metric tonnes have already been cleared, resulting in a completion rate of 99.85 percent. This category covers 12,116 drains spread across various parts of the national capital.
Performance Differs Across Civic Zones
The latest progress report highlights varying levels of achievement among different administrative zones. Civil Lines emerged as the top-performing area, surpassing its assigned target and reaching 109.08 percent completion. Rohini and Keshavpuram also demonstrated strong performance, each crossing the 97 percent mark.
Meanwhile, Najafgarh, which contains the highest number of major drains at 133, registered 65.91 percent completion. Other areas showed steady advancement, with the Central Zone achieving 76.67 percent progress and the South Zone recording 79.74 percent.
Annual Exercise Supports Flood Prevention
The city-wide desilting operation began in February as part of Delhi’s annual monsoon readiness programme. Every year, the MCD undertakes cleaning activities across more than 13,000 drains under its jurisdiction. The primary objective is to maintain uninterrupted water flow during periods of intense rainfall and reduce the chances of waterlogging in vulnerable locations.
Officials believe that timely removal of silt and debris plays a crucial role in strengthening the drainage network, especially in areas that have experienced flooding or traffic disruptions during previous monsoon seasons.
Authorities Adopt More Coordinated Approach
Civic officials stated that this year’s campaign has been carried out through a more organised and systematic strategy. Simultaneous cleaning operations have been conducted across multiple zones to accelerate progress and improve efficiency.
Authorities have also focused on locations that were identified as high-risk areas based on past monsoon experiences. By prioritising these sensitive points, the administration aims to improve drainage performance and minimise the impact of heavy downpours on residents and road users.
With a substantial portion of the desilting work already completed, city authorities remain focused on meeting the remaining targets before the onset of the monsoon, strengthening Delhi’s preparedness for the upcoming rainy season.
