Mizoram Floods – Over 80 Families Shifted After River Overflows
Mizoram Floods – More than 80 families have been moved to safer locations in Mizoram’s Lunglei district after the Khawthlangtuipui river overflowed following nearly a week of persistent rainfall. The affected area lies close to the Bangladesh border, where rising water levels have inundated homes and disrupted movement in several places.

Flooding affects Tlabung and nearby village
In Tlabung town, 42 families were evacuated after floodwater entered their homes or left them partially submerged. Officials said the river level rose steadily as heavy rain continued across the district, creating unsafe conditions for residents living near the riverbank.
Around 40 more families were relocated from Tipperaghat village in the Tlabung sub-division. Temporary arrangements have been made to keep the displaced residents away from flood-prone areas while authorities monitor the weather and river conditions.
Rain-related incidents reported across the state
The state has also recorded landslides, rockfalls and other rain-triggered incidents at more than 29 locations. Despite the widespread disruption, officials said there have been no reports of deaths or injuries so far.
Continuous rain has weakened slopes in several districts, leading to road blockages and concerns over further landslides. Local authorities are keeping watch on vulnerable areas and advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers.
NH-54 blocked, tourists remain stranded
National Highway 54 has been blocked by a major landslide near Bualte village in Lunglei district. The road closure has left several tourists stranded for the past four days, according to officials.
The disruption has also affected connectivity between the rest of Mizoram and the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha. Restoration work is expected to depend on weather conditions, as further rain could make debris clearance difficult and increase the risk of additional slope failures.
Aizawl-Lunglei route also disrupted
Another key road link, the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei highway, has been blocked near Ngaizel on the southern edge of Aizawl. Officials said the route was affected by a large rockfall and landslide, adding pressure to an already strained road network.
The blockage has made travel more difficult for people moving between Aizawl and southern parts of the state. Authorities are assessing the damage and coordinating with road maintenance teams to reopen affected stretches when conditions allow.
Minister calls for public caution
Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma has appealed to residents to remain alert as rainfall continues to trigger emergencies across Mizoram. He visited a landslide site near the Ngaizel filling station on Thursday and reviewed the situation faced by nearby families.
The minister said assistance for people affected by floods and landslides would be provided promptly under existing rules and legal provisions. He also said relief measures and financial support would be delivered transparently to eligible families.
Officials have urged residents in vulnerable zones to follow advisories, stay away from unstable slopes and report any signs of flooding or land movement to local authorities. With rain continuing in several parts of the state, disaster response teams remain on alert for further incidents.
