Infrastructure – Railways Approves Major Safety Upgrade for Jammu-Katra Route
Infrastructure – The Ministry of Railways has cleared a large-scale infrastructure protection plan worth Rs 238 crore for the Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway section under Northern Railway. The newly approved works are aimed at improving operational safety, strengthening vulnerable stretches, and ensuring smoother connectivity in a region known for difficult terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.

Focus on Strengthening Vulnerable Railway Sections
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the latest approval reflects the government’s continued focus on maintaining safe and reliable rail connectivity in geographically challenging areas. According to the minister, extensive technical inspections of tunnels and bridges on the route led to the decision to undertake several protective and rehabilitation measures.
Officials stated that the sanctioned package includes slope stabilisation work, tunnel repairs, seepage treatment inside tunnels, bridge safety measures, and additional engineering interventions at sensitive locations across the route. These measures are expected to reduce risks linked to landslides, water leakage, and structural stress.
Challenging Terrain Has Long Affected Operations
The Jammu–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail section has historically faced operational and engineering challenges due to its rugged topography and unstable geological conditions. Heavy rainfall, changing weather patterns, and difficult mountain terrain have often increased maintenance requirements on the route.
Railway authorities noted that despite these conditions, Indian Railways has consistently carried out maintenance and infrastructure strengthening projects to maintain uninterrupted services. The latest investment is part of broader efforts to improve long-term resilience across critical railway corridors in hilly regions.
Tunnel Rehabilitation and Bridge Protection Prioritised
One of the key areas of focus under the newly approved project is tunnel rehabilitation. Officials said seepage inside tunnels has remained a concern in certain stretches, especially during periods of intense rainfall. Corrective measures will now be implemented to improve structural durability and operational safety.
Bridge protection work has also been prioritised as part of the approved plan. Technical teams have identified locations requiring reinforcement and preventive safety measures to protect railway infrastructure from erosion and environmental damage.
The Ministry believes these interventions will help extend the life of existing infrastructure while improving overall reliability for train operations on the route.
Passenger Safety and Reliability Expected to Improve
Railway officials said the latest works are expected to strengthen passenger confidence on one of the region’s most important railway links. The Jammu–Katra section serves millions of travellers every year, including pilgrims visiting the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.
Authorities added that the ongoing push for resilient infrastructure development is intended to ensure uninterrupted connectivity even during adverse weather conditions. Once completed, the protection and rehabilitation measures are expected to make the railway section more dependable and operationally secure over the long term.
The Ministry of Railways has increasingly focused on preventive infrastructure upgrades in recent years, particularly in areas vulnerable to natural and geological challenges. Officials believe that investments in modern safety measures and timely engineering interventions are essential for maintaining reliable railway services across difficult landscapes.
