Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, calling it a significant step toward improving connectivity and accelerating development in the region. The newly inaugurated project is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities while strengthening economic and tourism prospects across Uttarakhand and adjoining areas.

A milestone in Uttarakhand’s development journey

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister noted that Uttarakhand has completed 25 years since its formation and is stepping into its 26th year with renewed momentum. He described the expressway as a landmark addition to the state’s evolving infrastructure network, emphasizing that such projects play a crucial role in shaping long-term progress.

He highlighted that improved road connectivity is not just about convenience but also about unlocking opportunities for trade, travel, and regional integration. According to him, the new corridor will serve as a key driver of growth in the coming years.

Focus on tourism and local economy

The Prime Minister underlined the importance of tourism in Uttarakhand, often referred to as Devbhoomi, and said the corridor would enhance access to major destinations such as Rishikesh and Haridwar. He expressed confidence that smoother travel routes would attract more visitors, boosting religious and leisure tourism alike.

He also pointed out that the project would create new opportunities for local businesses. From hotels and transport services to homestays and small enterprises, several sectors are expected to benefit from increased visitor flow and improved connectivity.

Infrastructure as a foundation for growth

Reiterating his government’s focus on infrastructure, the Prime Minister described highways, railways, waterways, and airways as the backbone of national progress. He said these networks form the foundation upon which future economic prosperity is built.

Drawing a comparison with earlier years, he mentioned that infrastructure spending has seen a substantial increase. He stated that national investment in infrastructure has grown significantly over time, with a notable portion allocated to Uttarakhand for the development of modern facilities.

Ongoing and upcoming projects

The Prime Minister also referred to several ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at strengthening the region’s infrastructure. Projects such as the Char Dham expressway and ropeway developments connecting key pilgrimage sites are expected to further enhance accessibility and safety for travelers.

In addition, he cited recent developments like metro expansions, new train services, and airport projects in nearby regions, describing them as part of a broader effort to modernize transportation networks across the country.

Emerging opportunities in Uttarakhand

Highlighting changing trends, the Prime Minister noted that Uttarakhand is gaining popularity as a destination for weddings and special events. Improved connectivity is likely to support this emerging sector, bringing additional revenue and visibility to the state.

He emphasized that such developments are not isolated achievements but part of a larger vision to ensure balanced regional growth. By linking cities more efficiently and encouraging investment, the government aims to create sustainable opportunities for future generations.

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, he concluded, represents more than just a road project. It reflects a broader commitment to building infrastructure that supports economic expansion, enhances tourism, and improves the quality of life for people across the region.
