Heatwave – Delhi Expands Cooling Support Network Amid Rising Temperatures
Heatwave – As intense summer conditions continue to affect the national capital, Delhi authorities have stepped up efforts to protect residents from the ongoing heatwave. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu recently reviewed the preparedness measures and relief arrangements being implemented across the city to help people cope with extreme temperatures. During a high-level meeting, officials discussed several initiatives aimed at reducing heat-related risks, particularly for those spending long hours outdoors.
Government Plans Additional Hydration Facilities
One of the major decisions taken during the review meeting was the establishment of 100 hydration points across locations that witness heavy public movement. According to officials, these facilities will be installed at key transport hubs and commercial areas to provide easy access to drinking water and basic health support. The initiative is intended to offer immediate relief to commuters, workers, and visitors who may be exposed to prolonged heat during the day.
Authorities have identified 50 busy metro stations, 25 market locations, and 25 bus terminals for the placement of these hydration points. Each location will offer drinking water, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets, and first-aid assistance to help prevent heat-related illnesses.
Focus on Vulnerable Communities
During the review, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized the importance of extending support to people who cannot avoid outdoor work despite harsh weather conditions. These include daily wage earners, labourers, street vendors, rickshaw pullers, and others whose livelihoods depend on remaining active during peak daytime hours.
Officials were instructed to ensure that relief measures reach those most at risk. The administration believes that timely access to cooling facilities, hydration support, and medical assistance can significantly reduce the impact of extreme heat on vulnerable populations.
Cooling Zones Operational Across Districts
The Revenue Department informed the Lieutenant Governor that dedicated cooling zones have already been established in eight districts of Delhi. These centres are designed to provide temporary shelter and relief for individuals affected by high temperatures.
People visiting these facilities can rest in shaded environments equipped with seating arrangements capable of accommodating around 100 individuals at a time. To improve comfort levels, each cooling zone has been fitted with desert coolers and high-speed fans. The centres also provide cold drinking water, helping visitors lower their body temperature before continuing their daily activities.
The Lieutenant Governor directed officials to ensure that similar facilities become operational in the remaining districts without delay so that residents across the city can benefit from the initiative.
Medical and Preventive Resources Made Available
Apart from cooling infrastructure, authorities have also stocked these centres with essential preventive and emergency supplies. ORS packets, protective caps, traditional cotton towels, and first-aid kits are available to visitors.
Officials said these resources are intended to help people avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other health complications commonly associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Emergency assistance can also be provided whenever required.
Measures Extended to Animals and Birds
Recognising that extreme weather affects more than just people, the administration has also introduced arrangements for animals and birds. Water containers and shaded resting spaces are being installed at prominent public locations, including Connaught Place and Lodhi Gardens.
The initiative aims to support stray animals, birds, and pedestrians by improving access to water and shelter. Existing natural water bodies within these areas are also being utilised as part of the broader effort to reduce the impact of the heatwave on living beings across the city.
