Governance – Delhi Administration Pushes Faster Business Reform Measures Ahead
Governance – The Delhi administration has asked government departments to complete all pending reforms linked to the Centre’s Ease of Doing Business programme before the end of June. The direction was issued on Friday during a high-level review meeting chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, where senior officials discussed the progress of ongoing deregulation efforts in the national capital.
Delhi Reviews Progress on Business Reforms
During the meeting, officials assessed measures designed to simplify rules, improve public services, and reduce procedural delays for businesses and residents. The administration said the reforms are intended to create a more efficient governance system while making daily administrative processes easier for citizens.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Sandhu highlighted Delhi’s improved performance in national logistics rankings. According to him, the capital has moved from the “Achievers” category to the “Exemplar” category in the LEADS 2025 rankings among Union Territories. The ranking measures logistics performance and the ease of conducting commercial activities across states and union territories.
Focus on Reducing Regulatory Burden
The Lieutenant-Governor said the administration is working towards a governance structure where approvals become simpler and unnecessary restrictions are removed. He noted that authorities are attempting to shift towards a system that allows activities unless specifically restricted by law, instead of relying on excessive permissions and lengthy compliance procedures.
Officials at the meeting were informed that legislative changes are being accelerated to support this transition. These changes are expected to reduce paperwork, shorten approval timelines, and improve coordination between departments.
Sandhu also referred to the proposed Omnibus Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026, which is currently being fast-tracked. The proposed legislation aims to simplify licensing procedures and streamline regulatory approvals across sectors operating in Delhi.
Service Standards to Remain a Priority
While discussing reforms, the Lieutenant-Governor stressed that easing business regulations should not affect public safety or service quality. He said authorities must maintain proper standards even as compliance systems are simplified.
According to officials, the administration plans to balance economic efficiency with accountability. Departments have been advised to ensure that simplified procedures continue to meet required safety and operational benchmarks.
The review meeting also examined how different departments are progressing on reforms identified by the central government. Authorities believe quicker implementation of these measures could improve investment conditions and support business activity in the capital.
Deadline Fixed for Pending Measures
Sandhu directed officials to complete all remaining priority reforms identified under the Government of India’s Ease of Doing Business framework by June 30. He instructed departments to avoid delays and ensure that implementation targets are met within the specified timeline.
The Lieutenant-Governor said the broader objective behind the reforms is aligned with the Prime Minister’s emphasis on reducing compliance burdens and improving ease of living for citizens. He added that administrative changes should ultimately lead to better transparency, improved efficiency, and greater opportunities for people living and working in Delhi.
Government officials indicated that the reforms are part of a larger effort to modernise governance practices in the capital. The administration expects that smoother approval systems and simplified regulations will support both businesses and public service delivery in the coming months.
