Governance – Bastar Development Push Gains Momentum Ahead of Amit Shah Visit
Governance – The Chhattisgarh government has stepped up preparations for the next phase of development initiatives in the Bastar region ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit. Chief Secretary Vikas Sheel recently chaired a high-level review meeting at the state secretariat, where officials were asked to draft a detailed roadmap for the proposed “Niyad Nellanar 2.0” programme.

During the meeting, senior officials assessed the progress made under the current Niyad Nellanar scheme, which focuses on improving access to government services and infrastructure in remote villages affected by Left-Wing Extremism. Authorities stated that several interior settlements, once isolated because of Maoist influence, are now gradually being linked with mainstream administrative and welfare systems.
Expansion of Government Services in Remote Villages
According to the review, residents in deep forest areas are now receiving basic public services that had remained inaccessible for years. Officials said many families have recently obtained essential documents and welfare benefits, including ration cards, bank passbooks, and LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme.
Housing conditions in several villages have also seen improvement through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Traditional mud structures are being replaced with permanent homes, while employment opportunities through MNREGA projects have reportedly helped create more stable income sources for local communities.
The administration noted that welfare outreach has expanded steadily in villages where government presence had earlier remained limited due to security concerns and difficult terrain.
Transport Connectivity Reaches Interior Areas
Infrastructure development emerged as a key focus during the review meeting. Officials informed the Chief Secretary that road and transport access has improved significantly across multiple parts of Bastar division.
For the first time, 425 villages have reportedly been connected to public transportation services. Under the Chief Minister’s Bus Service Scheme, 52 buses are currently operating across 50 routes that were previously considered inaccessible.
Authorities believe improved transport connectivity will support local trade, healthcare access, education, and faster movement between villages and district headquarters. Residents in remote pockets are also expected to benefit from easier access to markets and government offices.
Electricity and Mobile Networks Expanded
The government further stated that electricity infrastructure has reached many villages located deep inside forest regions. Power lines have reportedly been extended into several remote settlements, while solar lighting systems have been installed in thousands of homes that previously had no reliable source of electricity.
Officials also highlighted progress in digital and communication infrastructure. Mobile network connectivity has now been established in 3,056 villages across the region, helping reduce long-standing communication gaps.
Improved telecom services are expected to strengthen emergency communication, banking access, online education, and digital delivery of welfare schemes. Officials said better mobile coverage would also assist administrative coordination in difficult terrain.
Focus on Next Phase of Development
The proposed Niyad Nellanar 2.0 initiative is expected to build on the existing programme by strengthening infrastructure, welfare delivery, and connectivity in remote tribal regions. The roadmap under preparation is likely to focus on long-term development planning alongside improved public services.
The Bastar region has remained a major focus area for both state and central governments due to its strategic importance and history of Left-Wing Extremism. Officials indicated that the latest review aimed to evaluate how development projects are reshaping daily life in villages that had remained disconnected from mainstream facilities for decades.
The upcoming visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to include discussions on security, development progress, and future administrative priorities for the region.
