Fintech – Assam Launches India’s First AI-Driven Phygital Banking Branch
Fintech – Assam took another step toward technology-led financial services on Saturday as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the country’s first artificial intelligence-powered “phygital” banking outlet established by Slice Small Finance Bank in Guwahati.

The newly opened branch on GS Road blends conventional banking facilities with advanced digital systems, creating a model that combines in-person customer support with AI-enabled services. The initiative is being viewed as a significant development in India’s evolving banking sector, particularly in the northeastern region.
AI and Digital Services Integrated Into Banking
According to bank officials, the branch has been designed to provide customers with a seamless mix of digital and physical banking experiences. The facility includes AI-supported self-service kiosks, paperless transactions for deposits and withdrawals, and fully digital account onboarding systems.
Customers visiting the branch can complete many banking activities without lengthy paperwork or manual processing. Officials said the goal is to improve accessibility while reducing waiting time and operational barriers for users from different economic backgrounds.
The banking model also aims to encourage greater use of technology in routine financial transactions while maintaining direct customer assistance where needed.
Assam Positioned as Emerging Technology Investment Hub
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Sarma said the launch reflects Assam’s growing preparedness to support modern banking infrastructure and technology-oriented investments.
He noted that the arrival of such a digitally advanced banking facility aligns with the state government’s larger objective of attracting innovation-driven companies and responsible private investment.
Sarma stated that the presence of India’s first AI-powered phygital banking branch in Guwahati demonstrates increasing confidence in Assam as a destination for future-focused business initiatives.
The Chief Minister also emphasized that the state administration is working toward creating an ecosystem where businesses can expand while generating opportunities for the younger population.
Focus on Financial Inclusion and Small Businesses
A major highlight of the new banking model is its emphasis on financial inclusion. Sarma said the technology-based system would help extend banking access to groups that have traditionally faced difficulties in obtaining formal financial services.
He pointed out that small traders, women entrepreneurs, and individuals seeking faster access to working capital could benefit from the digital banking framework. One of the key features mentioned during the launch was the ability for customers to access credit directly through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), reducing the need for separate application processes.
Officials believe such services could simplify credit access for smaller businesses and self-employed individuals who often struggle with lengthy banking procedures.
Expansion of Modern Banking Infrastructure
The Slice Small Finance Bank branch is expected to strengthen access to savings accounts, payment services, and credit facilities through a combination of physical outreach and digital infrastructure.
Industry observers say the concept of “phygital” banking is gaining attention globally as financial institutions attempt to balance digital convenience with human interaction. In India, where digital payment adoption has grown rapidly in recent years, banks are increasingly exploring AI-supported systems to improve customer engagement and operational efficiency.
The Guwahati branch represents one of the first large-scale attempts in the country to integrate these technologies into a full-service banking environment.
With Assam continuing to push for technology-backed economic development, the launch is being viewed as another indication of the state’s efforts to position itself within India’s expanding digital economy.
