Rayudu Points to Lack of Senior Guidance

Former India cricketer Ambati Rayudu believes Chennai lacked experienced voices on the field when young pacer Anshul Kamboj came under heavy attack from Lucknow’s batting lineup. Speaking during ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut analysis show, Rayudu said the side needed calmer and more experienced players to help the youngster recover mentally during a difficult spell.

Kamboj endured a tough outing after Lucknow opener Mitchell Marsh launched an aggressive assault, striking four consecutive sixes in a single over. The fast bowler eventually finished with figures of 63 runs in just 2.4 overs as Lucknow chased 188 with remarkable ease, sealing a seven-wicket victory in only 16.4 overs.

Rayudu explained that moments like these require senior players to step in and slow the game down for younger teammates. According to him, a brief conversation or tactical pause could have helped Kamboj regain composure before the situation escalated further.

Importance of On-Field Communication

During the discussion, Rayudu highlighted how experienced players often play a major role in changing the rhythm of a match. He suggested that teammates should have spoken to the bowler between deliveries, encouraging him to reset mentally and rethink his plans against attacking batters.

The former Chennai batter noted that wicketkeeper Sanju Samson was positioned too far from the bowler to influence the situation directly. He felt someone closer to the action should have intervened with tactical suggestions, such as varying pace or attempting yorkers, instead of allowing the pressure to build unchecked.

Rayudu stressed that these small conversations can make a significant difference, especially for younger bowlers facing experienced international batters in high-pressure matches.

Marsh and Inglis Dominate the Chase

Lucknow’s successful chase was built around a commanding opening partnership between Marsh and Josh Inglis. The duo added 135 runs for the first wicket, placing Chennai under pressure almost immediately after the innings began.

Marsh was particularly destructive during his 90-run knock from only 38 deliveries. His clean hitting and aggressive approach ensured Lucknow stayed ahead of the required rate throughout the chase. Inglis provided solid support at the other end, allowing the pair to dismantle Chennai’s bowling attack with confidence.

Their partnership effectively removed Chennai from the contest long before the closing overs, leaving the opposition struggling for answers.

Chennai’s Competitive Total Goes in Vain

Earlier in the evening, Chennai Super Kings had posted a competitive score of 187 for five after useful contributions from several batters. Young batter Kartik Sharma played an important innings of 71, helping the side recover and build momentum during the middle overs.

Shivam Dube also added valuable runs late in the innings, remaining unbeaten on 32 and guiding Chennai close to the 190-run mark. At the halfway stage, the total appeared capable of testing Lucknow’s batting lineup on a challenging surface.

However, the aggressive start from Marsh and Inglis quickly shifted momentum. Chennai’s bowlers struggled to control the scoring rate, and the target was reached with more than three overs remaining.

Rayudu Backs Young Pacer Despite Difficult Night

Despite Kamboj’s expensive figures, Rayudu defended the young fast bowler and urged observers not to judge him solely on one performance. He pointed out that the pacer had impressed throughout the season and was bound to experience a difficult outing at some stage.

Rayudu also mentioned that many of Kamboj’s deliveries were not poor balls but were met with exceptional batting. Apart from a few errors in line and length late in the spell, he believed the Lucknow batters simply executed their attacking shots brilliantly.

The result leaves Chennai under increasing pressure as the tournament moves closer to the playoff stage, while Lucknow strengthened their position with an emphatic victory.
