Electricity Tariffs –  The Andhra Pradesh government has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping electricity tariffs unchanged for the next five years while continuing efforts to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure. Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said the administration is focused on ensuring reliable electricity supply despite rising demand and challenging weather conditions. He added that the government is also introducing reforms to improve the financial and operational performance of the power sector without placing an additional burden on consumers.

Government Reiterates Tariff Commitment

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Ravi Kumar said the coalition government stands by its promise not to increase electricity tariffs during the five-year period. He also highlighted the introduction of a “true-down” mechanism, describing it as a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in the state’s electricity management. According to the Minister, the reform reflects the government’s broader objective of making the power sector more accountable while safeguarding consumer interests.

Rising Power Demand Amid Changing Weather

The Minister stated that Andhra Pradesh is currently recording a daily electricity consumption of nearly 280 million units. He attributed the higher demand to changing weather patterns, which have increased the need for electricity across different regions of the state. Despite these conditions, he said the government had taken advance planning measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply and maintain the stability of the electricity network.

Restoration Efforts Continue After Weather-Related Disruptions

Ravi Kumar acknowledged that strong winds had caused temporary damage to electricity lines in certain locations, resulting in brief supply interruptions. However, he said electricity department teams had responded promptly and were restoring services without unnecessary delay. The Minister praised field personnel for their continuous efforts to minimise disruptions and ensure that consumers receive power as quickly as possible following weather-related incidents.

Focus on Strengthening Transmission Infrastructure

The government is also accelerating work to improve the state’s transmission network, according to Ravi Kumar. He said Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (AP Transco) is expanding its infrastructure to enhance the reliability of electricity distribution across the state. The ongoing programme includes the construction of new substations and the installation of additional transformers, which are expected to support growing electricity demand and improve the overall efficiency of the network.

Preparing for Future Industrial Growth

The Minister said the government is investing in electricity infrastructure with a long-term perspective, particularly to support industries expected to be established in the coming years. Expanding transmission and distribution facilities will help meet future industrial power requirements while maintaining a dependable supply for households, businesses, and other consumers. He noted that these infrastructure upgrades form an important part of the state’s broader development strategy.

Financial Reforms Alongside Consumer Protection

Ravi Kumar reiterated that while the government is working to strengthen the financial health and operational efficiency of the power sector, it remains committed to protecting consumers from higher electricity costs. He said the administration will continue implementing reforms designed to improve system performance without revising electricity tariffs during the promised five-year period. According to the Minister, balancing infrastructure development, operational improvements, and consumer welfare remains a key priority for the state’s energy sector.
