Elections –  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday sharply criticised the outcome of the recent Assembly elections in West Bengal and Assam, alleging that the results reflected a serious compromise of the public mandate. He claimed that the victory secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party represented a broader challenge to democratic processes in the country.

Concerns Over Electoral Mandate

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Gandhi urged political parties and observers to avoid celebrating the defeat of rivals, particularly the All India Trinamool Congress. He emphasized that the issue extended beyond party politics and should be viewed as a matter of national importance. According to him, the election results in both states raised questions about whether voters’ intentions had been accurately reflected.

Backing similar claims made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Gandhi alleged that a significant number of seats in the state may not have been decided fairly. He stated that more than 100 constituencies could have been affected, echoing Banerjee’s assertion that the electoral process had been compromised.

In Assam, the BJP retained power for a third consecutive term, reinforcing its political presence in the Northeast. The results in both states indicate a significant shift in regional political dynamics and suggest growing support for the party’s policies and leadership.
