ElectionDuty – Valparai Teachers Seek Local Training to Avoid Long Travel
ElectionDuty – School teachers assigned to election-related duties in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district have raised concerns over the location of their mandatory training sessions, urging authorities to shift the venue closer to their region. Educators from the hill town of Valparai say the current arrangement requires them to travel long distances, creating avoidable hardship.

Concerns Over Training Venue Selection
According to teachers working in Valparai, the election training sessions for most assembly constituencies in Coimbatore district have been scheduled within their respective areas. However, Valparai has been treated differently, with its training venue set in Pollachi, a town located far from the hilly region.
One primary school teacher from Valparai explained that this decision has left many educators feeling overlooked. While teachers in other constituencies can access nearby training centres, those from Valparai must travel significant distances to attend the same sessions. This discrepancy has prompted calls for a more practical and equitable arrangement.
Long Travel Poses Practical Difficulties
Teachers estimate that nearly 300 staff members from various parts of Valparai are required to travel approximately 100 kilometres to reach Pollachi. Given the region’s terrain and limited transport options, this journey is not only time-consuming but also physically demanding.
Many teachers have highlighted issues such as infrequent bus services, early departure requirements, and the difficulty of returning home the same day. These challenges are particularly severe for women and those dealing with health conditions. The situation, they say, adds unnecessary stress during an already demanding election duty period.
Demand for a Local Training Facility
In response to these concerns, teachers have requested that the upcoming training sessions be conducted within Valparai itself. They have suggested using the Government Arts and Science College in the area as a suitable venue. According to them, this would significantly reduce travel time and make the process more convenient for all participants.
Educators believe that holding the training locally would not only improve attendance but also ensure that teachers can focus better on their responsibilities without the burden of exhausting travel. They argue that such a change would demonstrate sensitivity to the unique geographical challenges faced by those living in remote and forested regions.
Lack of Official Response Raises Questions
Despite repeated attempts by teachers and media representatives to contact senior officials in the district election administration, there has been no clear response so far. This lack of communication has further added to the frustration among teachers, who are seeking clarity before the next round of training begins.
Teachers emphasize that they are committed to carrying out their election duties responsibly. However, they insist that logistical arrangements should be reasonable and considerate of ground realities. They hope that authorities will review their request promptly and take steps to address the issue.
A Call for Inclusive Planning
The situation highlights the broader need for inclusive planning in administrative processes, especially in regions with challenging geography. Teachers from Valparai are not opposing the training itself but are asking for a fair and practical approach that takes their circumstances into account.
As election preparations continue, their appeal underscores the importance of balancing efficiency with accessibility. Whether the authorities will revise the training arrangements remains to be seen, but the concerns raised have drawn attention to the difficulties faced by educators in remote areas.
