Deepfake – Piyush Goyal Alleges AI-Manipulated Video, Police Launch Investigation
Deepfake – Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has accused unidentified individuals of using artificial intelligence to manipulate his remarks made outside Parliament and circulate a misleading deepfake video. Calling the incident a deliberate attempt to spread false information, the minister confirmed that a formal police complaint has been filed and an FIR has been registered.
FIR Registered Following Deepfake Allegation
In a statement shared on X, Goyal said the alleged video was created by altering his original interaction with journalists through AI technology. According to him, the manipulated clip was intended to misrepresent his comments and mislead the public.
The minister stated that the complaint resulted in an FIR being registered at Chanakyapuri Police Station in New Delhi at 4:35 a.m. on July 25. He added that authorities have been asked to investigate the matter thoroughly and identify those responsible for creating and distributing the altered content.
Minister Warns of Strict Legal Action
Goyal said that everyone involved in producing, sharing or promoting the alleged fake video would face legal consequences under the law. He described the misuse of artificial intelligence for spreading misinformation as a serious concern that cannot be ignored.
He urged citizens to remain cautious while consuming content on social media and advised them to depend only on verified and authentic sources for accurate information. Expressing confidence in the public, particularly young people familiar with digital technology, Goyal said he believes they are capable of identifying misleading content and avoiding false narratives.
Government Rejects Viral Social Media Claim
The controversy comes after the government dismissed a viral social media video that claimed Goyal had made threatening remarks directed at students protesting in Delhi. Officials clarified that the circulating clip was misleading and did not accurately represent the minister’s original statement.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated content and the challenges authorities face in tackling digitally altered videos that can spread rapidly across online platforms.
Sonam Wangchuk Ends Fast After Government Assurance
Separately, Goyal also shared an update regarding social activist Sonam Wangchuk, stating that he had ended his fast after receiving assurances from the central government over issues concerning students and examination reforms.
According to the minister, BJP National President JP Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh met Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram to discuss his concerns. Following the meeting, Wangchuk decided to conclude his fast, a move Goyal described as reflecting confidence in the government’s commitment to addressing matters related to the country’s youth.
Focus on Examination Reforms
Goyal reiterated that the government remains committed to improving the examination system and protecting students’ interests. He said the administration has repeatedly expressed its determination to act firmly against paper leak incidents while introducing stronger reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in competitive examinations.
The minister added that safeguarding the future of students continues to remain one of the government’s highest priorities. He said efforts to strengthen the examination process and restore public confidence would continue alongside strict action against those responsible for irregularities.
