EducationReforms – The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Saturday cautioned the Union Government that it may intensify its agitation if there is no clear response regarding its demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The organisation said further discussions would serve little purpose unless the government openly clarified its position on the issue.
CJP Links Future Strategy to Government’s Response
Speaking to reporters after meeting Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, CJP activist Ashutosh Ranka described the discussions as constructive, particularly on compensation for affected students and legal issues. According to him, both sides reached an in-principle understanding on those matters, and the organisation is expecting a written document from the government outlining the agreed points.
However, Ranka stressed that the principal demand placed before the Centre remains unchanged. He said media reports indicating that the Education Minister is unlikely to resign have created uncertainty. If that is indeed the government’s final decision, he urged the Centre to state it officially so that the organisation can determine its next course of action without prolonging negotiations.
Resignation Demand Remains Central
Ranka maintained that administrative changes alone would not address the concerns raised by students and protesters. Referring to recent developments within the National Testing Agency (NTA), he argued that while officials may face action, political responsibility ultimately rests with the minister overseeing the education system.
He said the organisation would examine the government’s latest administrative measures in detail but insisted that accountability for alleged examination irregularities and the consequences faced by students could not be separated from ministerial responsibility. He added that the CJP had already submitted a broader charter of demands covering long-term reforms, though the resignation demand continues to be a key issue.
NTA Begins Institutional Restructuring
Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency has initiated a series of administrative reforms following recommendations made by the High-Level Committee of Experts headed by Professor K. Radhakrishnan.
The agency recently invited applications for senior professional positions, including General Manager-level appointments, and also opened recruitment for sixteen Young Professionals through the Union Public Service Commission’s Pratibha Setu portal. According to an official statement, these appointments mark the first phase of rebuilding the institution and strengthening its operational framework after concerns raised over examination management.
Government Moves to Strengthen Anti-Paper Leak Law
The Union Cabinet has also approved proposed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, with the objective of making existing anti-paper leak provisions more stringent. The move comes as protests linked to the NEET-UG controversy continue in different parts of the country.
Parliament has witnessed repeated disruptions over the issue, and sources indicate that the amendment Bill is expected to be introduced during the upcoming parliamentary proceedings on July 27. The proposed legislative changes are intended to reinforce legal action against those involved in examination malpractice and improve safeguards for future competitive tests.
Prime Minister Assures Tougher Action
The latest announcements follow a video message released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, in which he assured the public that the government would adopt stricter measures against paper leaks. He stated that the Cabinet would consider a draft Bill designed to strengthen the legal framework governing public examinations.
Separately, social activist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 26-day hunger strike at Medanta Hospital after receiving written assurances from the Union Government. The assurance, handed over in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, reportedly addressed concerns related to the NEET examination and promised broader reforms aimed at improving transparency and credibility in India’s competitive examination system.
