Election –  Polling commenced on Thursday across 152 constituencies in West Bengal, marking the opening phase of a closely watched Assembly election. The contest is expected to significantly influence the political trajectory of the state, with the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party locked in a direct battle. The remaining 142 seats are scheduled to go to polls in the second phase on April 29.

West bengal polls tight contest

Regional Divide Influences Electoral Landscape

The first phase covers 16 districts and reflects a clear regional split in political strength. Out of the total seats, 54 are located in North Bengal districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar, where the BJP has historically performed well. The other 98 constituencies fall within districts like Murshidabad, Birbhum, and West Midnapore, regions traditionally aligned with the Trinamool Congress.

This geographical divide is expected to play a crucial role in shaping voting patterns, as both parties aim to consolidate their strongholds while attempting gains in rival territories.

Multi-Cornered Contest Adds Complexity

While the primary contest remains between the TMC and BJP, the Left Front and Congress are also seeking to re-establish their presence. Their performance in this phase may indicate whether they can regain relevance in the state’s political landscape.

The election campaign has unfolded against a backdrop of intense political debate. Key issues include allegations of corruption, recruitment-related controversies, concerns about women’s safety, and regional grievances. Additionally, voter roll revisions have emerged as a major point of discussion, contributing to heightened political tensions.

High Voter Turnout Expected with Tight Security

More than 3.60 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this phase, including approximately 1.75 crore women. To ensure smooth conduct of polling, authorities have deployed around 2,450 companies of central forces. Over 8,000 polling stations have been identified as sensitive, reflecting the scale of security arrangements.

Officials have emphasized that extensive measures are in place to maintain order and encourage voter participation across all regions.

Strategic Importance for BJP and TMC

The first phase holds particular significance for the BJP, especially in North Bengal where the party has previously demonstrated strong performance. Success in this region is seen as essential for its broader ambitions in the state.

On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress has expressed confidence in improving its previous tally. Party leaders have indicated that they aim to surpass their earlier performance and retain a decisive mandate.

Voter Roll Revisions Spark Debate

One of the most discussed aspects of this election has been the revision of electoral rolls. Reports indicate that a substantial number of names were removed during the process, raising concerns among political parties about its potential impact.

In several districts, the number of deletions has been significant, which could influence closely contested seats. In the previous election, multiple constituencies were decided by narrow margins, highlighting how even small changes in voter lists can affect outcomes.

Key Candidates in Focus

The first phase will also determine the fate of several prominent political figures. High-profile contests are being closely watched, as their outcomes could shape party strategies in subsequent phases.

These leaders represent different political parties and regions, adding to the importance of this phase in setting the tone for the rest of the election.

Diverse Regions, Shared Stakes

From the tea-growing areas of North Bengal to the border districts and central regions, the first phase spans a wide variety of socio-economic landscapes. Despite these differences, the stakes remain equally high across constituencies.

As voting progresses, attention will remain on turnout patterns, regional trends, and the performance of key players, all of which will provide early संकेत of the broader electoral outcome.
