Election – Voting Begins for Key By-Elections and State Polls

Election –  Voting commenced on Thursday for crucial by-elections in parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, alongside the first phase of Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Authorities have deployed extensive security arrangements to ensure a smooth and peaceful polling process across all regions.

Election voting begins by elections

By-Elections Held to Fill Vacant Seats

The by-elections in Gujarat’s Umreth constituency and Maharashtra’s Baramati and Rahuri seats were necessitated by the passing of sitting legislators. These polls are being conducted to fill the unexpected vacancies and restore full representation in the respective assemblies.

In Maharashtra, the Rahuri constituency witnessed a vacancy following the death of MLA Shivaji Bhanudas Kardile, while Baramati required a fresh election after the demise of Ajit Anantrao Pawar. Both constituencies are considered politically significant, drawing close attention from major parties.

Baramati Contest Gains Attention After Leader’s Death

The Baramati by-election has attracted particular interest due to the circumstances surrounding the seat’s vacancy. Ajit Pawar, a prominent political figure, lost his life earlier this year in a plane crash while traveling to his constituency. His sudden death led to a major shift in the state’s political landscape.

Following this development, his wife, Sunetra Pawar, assumed a prominent leadership role. She was appointed Deputy Chief Minister and also took charge as the head of the Nationalist Congress Party. The by-election in Baramati is therefore seen as a significant political moment for both the party and the region.

Security Measures and Polling Arrangements

Polling stations across Gujarat and Maharashtra opened under tight security, with officials ensuring that voting proceeds without disruption. Voters began arriving early in the day, and authorities reported orderly participation in most areas.

Election officials have emphasized adherence to guidelines and transparency throughout the process. The Election Commission confirmed that all necessary measures have been taken to facilitate free and fair voting.

Counting and Result Schedule Announced

According to the Election Commission, the counting of votes for these by-elections will take place on May 4, 2026. Results are expected to be declared on the same day. The entire electoral process, including formalities and notifications, is scheduled to conclude by May 6.

Assembly Elections Begin in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal

Alongside the by-elections, large-scale Assembly elections also got underway in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Voting in both states began early Thursday morning and is set to conclude by 6:00 pm.

Tamil Nadu is conducting its Assembly election in a single phase, covering all 234 constituencies. Voters across the state are participating in what is expected to be a decisive electoral exercise.

In contrast, West Bengal is holding its elections in two phases. The first phase, currently underway, includes 152 constituencies, while the remaining 142 seats will go to polls in the second phase on April 29.

Candidates and Electoral Competition

West Bengal’s elections have drawn a large number of candidates, with 1,478 individuals contesting in the first phase alone. Political parties are actively competing for the 294 seats in the state Assembly, making it one of the most closely watched contests.

Before polling began, mock drills were conducted at multiple polling stations in both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. These exercises were carried out to ensure that voting machines and procedures function smoothly during the actual election.

Focus on Smooth and Fair Voting

Officials across all states have reiterated their commitment to maintaining transparency and fairness in the electoral process. Security personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas, and monitoring systems are in place to prevent any irregularities.

With multiple elections taking place simultaneously, the coming days are expected to play a crucial role in shaping regional political dynamics.
