Crime – The Kolkata Police have arrested a municipal councillor in connection with an alleged extortion case involving ₹70 lakh, following a complaint by a local businessman who claimed he was repeatedly threatened while trying to operate his business. Investigators said the accused, along with several associates, allegedly demanded money over an extended period and used intimidation, including threats to the complainant’s family, to force payments.

Complaint Details Trigger Police Action
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant alleged that the accused individuals pressured him into paying ₹70 lakh beginning in June 2023. He claimed the money was demanded in exchange for allowing his business to function without interference in the area. The complaint further stated that he and his family were repeatedly threatened with serious harm if they refused to comply with the demands.
Police said the case gained momentum after the victim approached authorities with detailed allegations describing continuous harassment and fear caused by the accused. The investigation was subsequently initiated based on the information provided in the complaint.
Accused Named in the FIR
Investigators identified the primary accused as Shams Iqbal, also known as Anil, who serves as the councillor of Ward No. 134 under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The FIR also names Md Faraz, known as Boon, Feroz Quereshi, also known as Churi Feroz, and several other unidentified associates.
According to police officials, the accused allegedly acted together with a common intention to collect illegal payments from the businessman. The complaint also alleges that after receiving the money, the group continued demanding additional payments and allegedly threatened the victim with a firearm when further extortion demands were made.
Police Outline Investigation
Kolkata Police stated that the case was registered after receiving a complaint from 33-year-old Md Shadab, a resident of the Metiabruz area. Officials said the investigation is focused on examining the allegations of prolonged intimidation, financial extortion, and criminal threats connected to the operation of the complainant’s business.
Police authorities added that evidence gathered during the investigation is being examined as part of the legal process. Investigators are also looking into the alleged involvement of the other individuals named in the complaint.
Case Registered Under Multiple Legal Provisions
Officials confirmed that the case was formally registered on June 28, 2026, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as the Arms Act. The allegations include extortion, criminal intimidation, and offences related to the alleged use of a firearm during the commission of the crime.
Law enforcement officers said the registration of the case followed the standard legal procedure after reviewing the complaint and preliminary findings. The investigation remains active, and further action will depend on the evidence collected during the course of the inquiry.
Councillor Taken Into Custody
Police confirmed that Shams Iqbal, also known as Anil, has been arrested by officers from Garden Reach Police Station. Authorities have not announced any additional arrests so far but indicated that the investigation into the alleged role of the remaining accused is continuing.
Officials have not disclosed further details regarding future legal proceedings, stating that the matter is currently under investigation. The police have maintained that all allegations will be examined through due process before the case proceeds in court.
