Congress – Kerala Leadership Decision Nears After Days of Political Uncertainty
Congress – The Congress party is expected to announce Kerala’s next Chief Minister on Thursday, nearly ten days after the Assembly election results delivered a decisive victory to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The prolonged wait has kept political circles across the state on edge as senior party leaders in Delhi worked through intense consultations before reaching a final decision.

High Command Signals End to Leadership Discussions
The clearest indication that the deadlock was ending came late Wednesday night from New Delhi. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh stated after a meeting at Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge’s residence that discussions authorised by the Congress Legislative Party had been completed. He confirmed that the official announcement regarding Kerala’s new Chief Minister would be made on Thursday.
The brief statement quickly sparked reactions across Kerala, where uncertainty surrounding the leadership issue has continued since the UDF defeated the Left Democratic Front government headed by Pinarayi Vijayan. The election result marked the end of a decade-long Left administration in the state.
Senior Leaders Hold Intensive Consultations
Behind closed doors, Congress leaders spent Wednesday evaluating possible choices for the top post. Key discussions reportedly involved senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Kharge, and veteran strategist A. K. Antony.
The leadership weighed the strengths and political acceptability of the three leading contenders — V. D. Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and K. C. Venugopal. Each candidate is believed to enjoy support from different sections within the party, making the selection process more complicated than initially expected.
Supporters Gather Across Kerala
As deliberations continued in Delhi, political activity intensified in Kerala. One of the most closely watched locations on Wednesday was Satheesan’s residence in Aluva. Supporters gathered there from the morning and remained outside throughout the day, eagerly tracking developments from the national capital.
The area witnessed a steady stream of television crews, party workers, and political observers. Slogans from supporters and constant speculation over the final decision transformed the usually quiet neighbourhood into a centre of political attention.
A similar atmosphere was visible at Chennithala’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram, where party workers and supporters remained hopeful that the senior leader’s long administrative experience and organisational influence could work in his favour during the final round of discussions.
Venugopal’s Silence Fuels Speculation
Among the three leading names, the role of Venugopal generated the most discussion during the day. His emergence as a strong contender reportedly changed internal political calculations and contributed to the delay in announcing the final decision.
Despite growing speculation, Venugopal stayed away from the high-profile meetings involving Rahul Gandhi and Kharge. His absence from the visible consultations only increased curiosity within political circles, with many observers suggesting that quiet negotiations may have been taking place behind the scenes.
Late-Evening Meeting Adds Fresh Twist
Another development that attracted attention came later in the evening when senior Lok Sabha MP Kodikunnil Suresh was seen visiting Antony’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram. The meeting immediately triggered discussions about possible last-minute efforts to influence the leadership decision before the official announcement.
With suspense continuing for more than a week after the election verdict, Kerala now awaits the Congress high command’s final declaration on who will lead the state government as its 13th Chief Minister.
