Agriculture – BJP National President Nitin Nabin on Monday visited renowned agricultural economist and Padma Bhushan recipient Dr. Sardara Singh Johl at his residence in Ludhiana, where the two held detailed discussions on key issues affecting the farming sector. Focus on Punjab’s Agricultural Future

Nabin was accompanied by Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon and the party’s state General Secretary Anil Sarin during the visit. According to party sources, the interaction centered on strengthening the agricultural economy and exploring long-term measures to improve farming practices in the state.

Following the meeting, Nabin shared details of the discussion on social media, highlighting Dr. Johl’s contributions to Indian agriculture and policy development. He noted that the veteran expert’s experience and understanding of the sector continue to provide valuable guidance on issues affecting farmers and rural communities.

Recognition of Dr. Johl’s Contributions

In his remarks, Nabin described Dr. Johl as one of India’s most respected agricultural economists. He referred to the former Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University and former Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices as an influential figure whose work helped shape several agricultural reforms and encouraged diversification beyond traditional cropping patterns.

The BJP leader said Dr. Johl’s extensive engagement with farming communities over the years has enabled him to understand the concerns of farmers at the grassroots level. He added that the economist’s contributions to the agricultural sector earned him national recognition and respect.

Outreach Linked to Government Initiatives

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Nabin said his interaction with Dr. Johl was part of a broader outreach effort aimed at informing prominent citizens about the achievements and initiatives undertaken by the central government during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure.

According to him, engaging with respected personalities from different sectors is important because it allows policymakers and political leaders to exchange ideas and receive constructive feedback on governance and development-related issues.

Visit Cut Short Amid Party Developments

Although Nabin was scheduled to continue his engagements in Punjab, his visit was shortened and he returned to New Delhi on Monday afternoon. The change in plans came amid growing speculation regarding possible organisational changes within the BJP.

His itinerary had originally included a return to Chandigarh, a courtesy meeting with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, and an interaction with several distinguished personalities at a gathering hosted by Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon.

Strategy Discussions Ahead of Assembly Polls

Earlier in the day, Nabin chaired a meeting with senior BJP leaders in Ludhiana. Those present included Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, Rajya Sabha members Tarun Chugh, Rajinder Gupta and Raghav Chadha, along with senior Punjab BJP leaders such as Sunil Jakhar and Ashwani Sharma.

The leaders reviewed the prevailing political situation in Punjab and discussed organisational strategies as the party prepares for future electoral contests. The meeting also focused on strengthening the BJP’s presence across the state and expanding its outreach among voters.

Preparations for 2027 Elections

Political observers view Nabin’s Punjab visit as part of the BJP’s broader preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. The party has already announced its intention to contest all 117 seats in the state following the end of its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

With electoral planning underway and efforts to widen its support base continuing, the BJP appears to be intensifying both its organisational activities and engagement with influential voices from different sectors, including agriculture, which remains a crucial issue in Punjab’s political landscape.
