Precautionary restrictions imposed across parts of the valley

Anticipating possible protests on the final Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, security measures were introduced early in the morning in Srinagar and several surrounding areas of the Kashmir Valley. Officials said restrictions on public gatherings were placed particularly in neighborhoods with significant Shia populations as a preventive step to maintain public order.

According to local authorities, the decision was taken after intelligence inputs suggested that demonstrations could take place following Friday prayers. Security personnel were deployed in sensitive areas, and movement restrictions were introduced in some locations to prevent large assemblies. Officials emphasized that these measures were precautionary and aimed at ensuring that the day passed peacefully.

Demonstrators voice opposition to strikes and support Palestine

During the demonstrations in Magam and Budgam, groups of protesters gathered on roads and public spaces while chanting slogans against the United States and Israel. Participants also expressed solidarity with Palestine, reflecting broader regional concerns linked to developments in the Middle East.

Despite the strong sentiments displayed during the protests, authorities said the gatherings remained largely peaceful. Officials confirmed that law enforcement agencies were closely monitoring the situation to prevent any escalation. Additional personnel were kept on standby in case tensions increased during the day.

Security officials noted that such demonstrations often occur on occasions when international developments intersect with local religious observances, especially during Ramadan. They added that coordination among various security agencies had been strengthened to manage any unexpected developments.

Youm-ul-Quds observance raises concerns about protests

The final Friday of Ramadan, known as Juma-tul-Vida, holds special significance for many Muslims around the world. It is also observed as Youm-ul-Quds, a day when many communities express solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Authorities in Kashmir expected that the observance could lead to demonstrations after congregational prayers.

Because of these concerns, officials increased security arrangements around major mosques and public gathering areas. Surveillance and patrols were intensified across several districts in the valley to ensure that protests did not turn confrontational.

Local administrators said the goal was to allow religious observances to proceed while ensuring that law and order was maintained. Police and civil officials continued to assess developments throughout the day.

Jamia Masjid in Srinagar closed for Friday prayers

Amid the heightened security environment, authorities closed the historic Jamia Masjid located in the Nowhatta area of Srinagar. The mosque is one of the largest and most significant religious sites in the region and traditionally attracts thousands of worshippers on the last Friday of Ramadan.

The closure drew criticism from Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. In a message shared on social media, he said the mosque had again been closed on a day when large numbers of people usually gather for prayers.

Farooq stated that worshippers from various towns and villages often travel to Jamia Masjid for the final Friday prayers of Ramadan, but the gates had been locked once more. He also claimed that it marked another year in which permission for congregational prayers at the mosque had not been granted.

Authorities continue monitoring the situation

Officials maintained that the restrictions and mosque closure were part of wider security precautions. They said the priority remained preventing unrest while allowing the day’s religious observances to proceed peacefully across the valley.

Security forces continued to monitor developments in different districts throughout Friday. Authorities indicated that additional measures could be taken if required, depending on how the situation evolved after prayers and during the evening hours.

By late afternoon, officials reported that the demonstrations had remained peaceful and no major incidents had been recorded. However, security agencies remained alert as the valley observed the final days of Ramadan amid heightened regional tensions.
