Weather – Moderate Rainfall Expected Across Tamil Nadu in Coming Days
Weather – The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department in Chennai has predicted a spell of moderate rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu in the next few days. The expected showers are likely to impact districts along the Western Ghats as well as coastal areas in the southern region of the state.

Low-Pressure Trough Driving Rain Activity
According to meteorologists, the current weather pattern is influenced by a trough of low pressure positioned about 0.9 km above mean sea level. This system stretches from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar, passing through parts of south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Such atmospheric conditions often contribute to increased cloud formation and rainfall activity.
Rainfall Likely Across Multiple Regions
Weather officials have indicated that several districts may experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional lightning. The regions expected to be affected include the Western Ghats districts, coastal belts, delta areas, and Karaikal. These areas could witness intermittent rainfall throughout the day, with some pockets receiving more intense showers than others.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Key Districts
Particular attention has been drawn to the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, where heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next three days. Given the terrain in these areas, there is a possibility of localized disruptions, especially in hilly regions where landslides and water accumulation can occur.
Authorities have advised residents in these districts to stay cautious and monitor local advisories. People living in vulnerable zones are urged to take preventive measures to avoid potential risks.
Additional Districts Under Watch
Apart from the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, districts such as Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri are also likely to receive significant rainfall over the next two days. The weather system is gradually moving southward, expanding its influence across more parts of the state.
On May 1, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Theni districts. The situation is likely to persist into May 2, with forecasts indicating heavy showers in parts of Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Virudhunagar.
Advisory for Residents and Fishermen
Local administrations have been asked to remain alert, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas. Officials are focusing on preparedness to handle any emergency situations that may arise due to continuous rainfall.
Fishermen operating along the southern coast have also been cautioned. Adverse weather conditions, including rough seas and sudden changes in wind patterns, could pose risks, and they are advised to plan their activities carefully.
Rainfall Not Linked to Monsoon Yet
Meteorologists clarified that the current rainfall is not associated with the southwest monsoon, which is still weeks away from reaching the region. Instead, the showers are a result of localized atmospheric instability caused by the existing low-pressure trough.
Such pre-monsoon weather patterns are not uncommon and can sometimes bring intense but short-lived rainfall episodes across southern India.
As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.
