Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised the US Senate after lawmakers overwhelmingly backed a procedural vote to move forward with a Russia sanctions bill during his visit to Washington. Speaking after meetings with senior American leaders, Zelenskyy said the vote reflected strong bipartisan support for Ukraine and marked an important moment in ongoing international efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Bipartisan Senate Meeting Focuses on Security Support

During his visit to the US Capitol, Zelenskyy met with more than 60 senators from both major political parties. According to the Ukrainian leader, discussions centered on sustaining US assistance for Ukraine, with particular emphasis on strengthening protection against missile attacks.

In a message shared on X, Zelenskyy thanked American lawmakers for recognizing the resilience of Ukrainian forces and their continued commitment to helping the country improve its defensive capabilities. He said enhancing anti-ballistic missile systems remained one of the key priorities raised during the discussions.

Russia Sanctions Bill Clears Initial Senate Hurdle

Zelenskyy also welcomed the Senate’s procedural approval of legislation designed to impose tougher sanctions on Russia. He described the vote as a meaningful milestone, noting that it took place on the same day lawmakers paid tribute to late Senator Lindsey Graham, who had strongly supported the sanctions proposal.

According to Zelenskyy, witnessing the vote in person carried symbolic importance. The measure received backing from 86 senators, demonstrating broad bipartisan agreement. He said the legislation represents an important move toward achieving lasting peace while reinforcing pressure on Russia through economic measures.

US Lawmakers Stress Need for Greater Pressure on Russia

Democratic members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee highlighted the significance of the vote, describing the sanctions package as one of the strongest measures considered against Russia since the conflict began.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen stated that the overwhelming support in the chamber reflected the need to hold Russia accountable for the destruction caused during the war. She argued that stronger sanctions remain an important tool for increasing international pressure on Moscow.

Trump Describes Meeting With Zelenskyy as Productive

US President Donald Trump also commented on his discussions with Zelenskyy following their meeting in Washington. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said it was an honor to meet the Ukrainian President and noted that the conversation covered several important issues. He added that the meeting concluded positively.

The discussions came as Ukraine continues seeking stronger security cooperation with the United States while pursuing diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict.

Defence Cooperation With Lockheed Martin Expands

Apart from his meetings with political leaders, Zelenskyy also held talks with executives from US defence manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The discussions focused on expanding industrial cooperation between the company and Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said both sides explored opportunities for joint production, technology sharing and increasing Ukraine’s domestic defence capabilities. The company manufactures several systems used by Ukraine, including HIMARS, ATACMS, F-16 aircraft and missiles designed for Patriot air defence systems.

According to the Ukrainian President, both teams are already working on practical proposals that could accelerate co-production projects and improve the country’s ability to defend civilians and critical infrastructure against aerial attacks.

Ukraine Pursues Long-Term Strategic Partnership

The Washington visit highlighted Ukraine’s broader strategy of strengthening long-term security ties with the United States. Alongside diplomatic engagement, Kyiv continues seeking advanced air defence technology, deeper industrial collaboration and sustained political backing as international efforts to address the conflict with Russia continue.
