Qatar – Jaishankar Visit Advances India-Qatar Strategic Partnership
Qatar – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrapped up his visit to Qatar on July 5, 2026, after holding talks aimed at expanding cooperation between New Delhi and Doha. The visit focused on strengthening the two countries’ strategic partnership across energy, trade, investment, security and people-to-people links.

Talks Focus on Economic and Strategic Cooperation
Jaishankar met Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his stay in Doha. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders reviewed the broader state of bilateral relations and discussed areas where cooperation could be widened.
Energy remained a central part of the discussions, reflecting Qatar’s importance as a major supplier in India’s energy mix. The ministers also considered ways to encourage greater trade, investment and connectivity between the two countries. Security cooperation and closer institutional engagement were also part of the agenda.
The meeting came as India and Qatar continue to build on the Strategic Partnership established during the February 2025 visit of Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to India.
Regional Developments Discussed in Doha
Regional developments, including the continuing tensions in West Asia, were another important subject of the talks. Jaishankar said he appreciated Qatar’s assessment of the conflict and its wider implications for the region.
The Indian minister also praised Qatar’s role in efforts to reduce tensions through dialogue. The Ministry of External Affairs said Jaishankar commended Doha’s active mediation in the ongoing negotiations involving the United States and Iran.
Qatar has often served as a channel for diplomatic engagement in the region, particularly during periods of heightened political and security uncertainty. India’s acknowledgement of that role underlined the importance New Delhi places on dialogue and regional stability.
Indian Community Receives Recognition
Jaishankar also met members of the Indian community living in Qatar. He recognised their contribution to the relationship between the two countries and praised their resilience during recent regional challenges.
In a public message after the meeting, he thanked the Qatari leadership for supporting the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the country. Qatar is home to a large Indian expatriate population working across sectors including construction, services, healthcare, education and business.
The minister said the Indian community has continued to strengthen everyday ties between the two nations. Their presence has helped create deeper social and economic connections beyond official government engagement.
Partnership Expected to Expand Further
India and Qatar have maintained close relations for decades, with energy trade forming a major pillar of the partnership. Qatar’s role as a supplier of liquefied natural gas has made it an important economic partner for India, while Indian companies and professionals have a substantial presence in the Gulf country.
The latest discussions indicated that both sides are seeking opportunities beyond traditional energy ties. Trade, investment, transport connectivity and security cooperation are expected to receive greater attention as the partnership develops.
Jaishankar’s Qatar visit was part of a wider regional engagement programme during which he was expected to meet senior leaders and foreign policy counterparts. The discussions in Doha highlighted India’s continued effort to maintain strong ties with Gulf partners while supporting diplomatic approaches to regional challenges.
