Hinduphobia – Minnesota Lawmakers Consider Resolution on Anti-Hindu Bias

Hinduphobia – A proposal addressing concerns over anti-Hindu discrimination is drawing attention in the US state of Minnesota, where lawmakers are reviewing a resolution that seeks to formally acknowledge Hinduphobia and related incidents. The measure, introduced in the Minnesota Senate on March 9, has already received support from hundreds of community members and advocacy groups.

Community voices highlight growing concerns

During a recent hearing before the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, representatives from the Hindu community presented testimonies describing a pattern of troubling incidents. These accounts included reports of offensive graffiti at a temple in Edina, thefts targeting priests’ residences in Maple Grove, and earlier cases of vandalism and harassment involving Hindu places of worship.

Neha Markanda, who leads the Minnesota chapter of the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), emphasised the importance of official recognition. She told lawmakers that acknowledging such discrimination sends a clear message to affected communities that their experiences are being taken seriously and that the state remains committed to ensuring safety and respect for all residents.

Resolution aims to reinforce inclusivity

The proposed resolution focuses on recognising discrimination faced by Hindu Americans while reaffirming Minnesota’s stance on religious freedom, diversity, and mutual respect. According to CoHNA, the initiative is the result of sustained outreach efforts by community members who have been working to bring attention to the issue.

A letter submitted to lawmakers, signed by more than 400 residents within a short span, urged swift support for the resolution. The letter also called for improved mechanisms to report hate incidents and greater inclusion of Hindu perspectives in diversity and anti-bias programmes across the state.

Interfaith support strengthens the initiative

Support for the resolution has extended beyond the Hindu community. Representatives from other religious groups have voiced their backing, highlighting the broader importance of confronting religious intolerance in all its forms.

Ethan Roberts from the Jewish Community Relations Council addressed lawmakers during the hearing, noting that underestimating or ignoring targeted hate can have serious consequences. He stressed that recognising and naming such issues is a necessary step toward addressing them effectively.

Advocates say this interfaith backing reflects a wider coalition that sees the need to treat anti-Hindu bias with the same seriousness as other forms of discrimination.

National trends underline urgency

Supporters of the resolution also pointed to incidents reported across the United States, including acts of violence, harassment, and coordinated online campaigns targeting Hindu communities. A 2022 study by Rutgers University highlighted the spread of misinformation and hostility directed at Hindus on social media platforms, warning that such trends could escalate into real-world harm if left unchecked.

CoHNA representatives stated that their Minnesota chapter has been actively collaborating with policymakers and local stakeholders to present data and raise awareness about these concerns.

Role of Hindu Americans in Minnesota

Community leaders noted that Hindu Americans have made significant contributions to Minnesota’s social and economic landscape over the years. They argue that ensuring the ability to practise faith freely and without fear is essential to maintaining the state’s commitment to equality and pluralism.

The organisation also confirmed that it will continue engaging with legislators, civic leaders, and interfaith groups to advance the resolution and promote broader efforts aimed at reducing religious discrimination.

Increasing focus on hate crime legislation

In recent years, several US states have taken steps to address hate crimes and discrimination more directly, particularly as incidents affecting minority communities have gained visibility. Lawmakers in different regions have considered measures that recognise specific forms of bias within wider diversity frameworks.

Minnesota, which has seen steady growth in its Indian-origin population, is also witnessing increased civic participation from diaspora communities. Advocacy groups are playing a more active role in discussions related to civil rights, inclusion, and religious freedom, reflecting a broader shift toward community-driven policymaking.
