Rocky – Sylvester Stallone has revisited the lasting impact of Rocky, saying the 1976 film was never meant to be limited to the journey of a boxer. The actor and writer said the story was created for people who have faced doubt, setbacks or rejection but continued to pursue their goals.
In a video interview shared on social media, Stallone appeared alongside several people associated with the film to discuss its making and cultural influence. He said Rocky was rooted in a broader message of resilience, determination and self-belief.
Stallone Describes Rocky as a Personal Story
In the accompanying caption, Stallone explained that the film reflected experiences shared by many people. He wrote that Rocky was about anyone who had been “counted out” but chose to keep moving forward despite difficult circumstances.
During the interview, Stallone said the screenplay was closely connected to his own life at the time. He described the central character as someone with courage and persistence, qualities that allowed audiences to identify with his struggle.
“When I wrote Rocky, I wasn’t just writing a script,” Stallone said in the video. “I was writing about myself, really, about all of us.”
He added that the character’s determination helped make the film meaningful for viewers across generations. According to Stallone, millions of people saw elements of their own lives in Rocky Balboa’s fight to prove himself.
Philadelphia Steps Remain a Defining Image
Stallone also spoke about the famous training sequence in which Rocky runs up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He said the 72 steps represented the character’s biggest challenge and became a symbol of his progress.
For Rocky, reaching the top was not simply a physical achievement. Stallone described it as the ultimate test of whether the fighter could overcome the barriers standing in his way.

Rocky Became a Major Film Franchise
Rocky was released in 1976 as an American sports drama directed by John G. Avildsen. Stallone wrote the screenplay and played the lead role of Rocky Balboa, a struggling club fighter from Philadelphia who also works as a debt collector.
The story follows Rocky after he receives an unexpected opportunity to challenge Apollo Creed for the world heavyweight championship. The film also featured Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith in key roles.
The success of the first film led to a long-running franchise. Rocky II arrived in 1979, followed by Rocky III in 1982. Several additional sequels expanded the story of Balboa and his career in the boxing world.
Creed Films Introduced a New Generation
The Rocky universe later continued with the Creed series, beginning with Creed in 2015. Michael B. Jordan played Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, while Stallone returned as Rocky in a mentoring role in the first two films.
Creed was directed by Ryan Coogler, followed by Creed II under Steven Caple Jr. Michael B. Jordan made his directorial debut with Creed III, which continued Adonis Creed’s story without Stallone appearing on screen.
