Bengali Cinema –Bengali cinema has played a significant role in shaping Indian and world cinema, yet actor Jeet believes the industry has not always received the level of attention it deserves across mainstream India.
The actor was speaking about the continuing international appreciation for Bengali filmmakers, particularly legendary director Satyajit Ray. His comments came in the context of Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently praising Ray and his landmark film Pather Panchali.
Jeet reflects on Bengali cinema’s influence
Nolan has previously described Satyajit Ray as one of the greatest filmmakers in cinema history and praised Pather Panchali as an “absolutely incredible film.” For Jeet, such recognition highlights the strength of Bengali storytelling and its enduring relevance beyond India.
Speaking to IANS, Jeet said it was unfortunate that a film culture with such a substantial contribution to world cinema does not always receive comparable visibility within mainstream India.
According to the actor, the issue is not a lack of quality or creative achievement. Instead, he believes Bengali cinema has historically faced a disadvantage when it comes to the scale of exposure enjoyed by some larger film industries.
‘Our legacy is unquestionable,’ says Jeet
Jeet maintained that Bengali cinema has consistently produced influential filmmakers, performers and stories. He expressed confidence that strong and authentic storytelling can help the industry reach a wider audience in the years ahead.
“Bengali cinema has never lacked greatness—it has only lacked the scale of visibility that some other industries enjoy,” Jeet said. He added that the legacy of Bengali cinema remains unquestionable and that continued efforts to tell powerful, authentic stories could bring greater recognition.
The actor also expressed the belief that quality filmmaking ultimately finds an audience, regardless of regional boundaries.
Jeet prepares for his next film
Meanwhile, Jeet is preparing for the release of his upcoming Bengali film Keu Bole Biplabi Keu Bole Dakat. Directed by Pathikrit Basu, the project is described as a biographical action drama based on the life of Indian revolutionary Anant Singh.
The film features a sizeable ensemble cast alongside Jeet, including Tota Roy Chowdhury, Kaushik Sen, Rajatab Dutta, Chandan Sen, Loknath Dey and Mimi Chakraborty.
Story set across two phases of Anant Singh’s life
Set against the backdrop of 1960s Kolkata, the film centres on Ananta Singh, an aging and mysterious figure whose daring robberies make him a controversial public figure. While some view him as a criminal, others regard him as a revolutionary figure fighting against an unjust system.
The narrative also moves between different periods of his life. It traces his early association with the freedom struggle under Masterda Surya Sen before moving into the later phase of his life, when his frustration with corruption and injustice leads him towards another form of resistance.
Anant Singh’s complicated journey forms the central thread of the film, bringing together elements of history, action and personal conflict. With Jeet leading the cast, the project is among the actor’s notable upcoming releases.
