Port Development – Jagan Alleges Ramayapatnam Port Disinvestment Favours Private Interests
Port Development – YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has criticised the Andhra Pradesh government over the proposed disinvestment of the Ramayapatnam Port project, alleging that the terms of the process are unfair to the State. In a statement shared on X, the former Chief Minister claimed that the current administration has weakened a project that was originally designed to strengthen public infrastructure and drive industrial growth. He argued that the government’s approach could reduce the long-term value of a strategically important public asset.
Jagan Defends Previous Government’s Port Development Strategy
Jagan said the YSRCP government had laid a strong foundation for multiple port projects during its tenure. According to him, extensive preparatory work had already been completed for Ramayapatnam, Machilipatnam, and Mulapeta ports. This included acquiring land, obtaining mandatory statutory approvals, securing financial closure, and awarding engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts.
He maintained that these measures were intended to accelerate construction while creating a reliable framework for future industrial investments. The former Chief Minister stated that the projects were conceived as long-term infrastructure initiatives capable of supporting economic expansion across the State.
Industrial Investments Linked to Ramayapatnam Port
Highlighting the economic significance of Ramayapatnam Port, Jagan referred to several large-scale industrial proposals associated with the project. He said the port was expected to serve as a logistics hub for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s proposed Rs 1 lakh crore greenfield refinery, a major investment planned in the region.
He also mentioned the proposed giga-scale manufacturing facility by Indosol Solar and dedicated berths planned for JSW Steel to facilitate operations connected to its Kadapa steel plant. According to Jagan, these projects demonstrate the strategic role the port could play in attracting manufacturing investment, improving exports, and generating employment opportunities.
Allegations Over Disinvestment Process
In his remarks, Jagan alleged that the present government’s handling of the Ramayapatnam Port disinvestment has raised serious concerns about the financial interests of the State. He claimed that the proposed terms disproportionately benefit private entities while reducing the potential returns that could otherwise accrue to the public sector.
The YSRCP leader described the move as financially imprudent and questioned whether the disinvestment model adequately protects public assets. He argued that infrastructure projects developed with public resources should be managed in a way that ensures long-term benefits for the State and its residents.
Political Debate Continues Around Key Infrastructure Projects
The latest comments add to the continuing political debate between the YSRCP and the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) over the direction of infrastructure development in Andhra Pradesh. Port projects have emerged as a major point of contention, with both sides presenting different views on investment policies, project execution, and asset management.
While Jagan has defended the planning and execution undertaken during the YSRCP’s tenure, the State government has yet to respond to these specific allegations. The discussion surrounding Ramayapatnam Port is expected to remain significant, given its importance to Andhra Pradesh’s industrial and maritime development plans.
