Environment – Sandeep Dikshit Appeals to Uttarakhand Government to Stop Saat Mod Tree Felling

Environment –Former Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit has urged the Uttarakhand government to immediately halt the ongoing cutting of trees in the Saat Mod forest area, saying the project requires a balanced approach that protects both development needs and the region’s fragile ecosystem.

Uttarakhand tree felling row

The appeal was made through a public letter addressed to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Dikshit, who also serves as the Chairperson of Rachnatmak Congress, raised concerns over the large-scale removal of trees linked to the Bhaniyawala-Rishikesh highway expansion project, an important route connecting Dehradun with Rishikesh.

Concerns Over an Ecologically Sensitive Region

In his letter, Dikshit pointed out that the Saat Mod stretch lies close to the Rajaji Tiger Reserve and forms an important wildlife corridor. He referred to reports indicating that approval has been granted for the removal of thousands of trees to facilitate the widening of the National Highway between Bhaniyawala, Jolly Grant and Rishikesh.

According to him, the area supports the natural movement of several wildlife species, including elephants. He cautioned that extensive tree felling in such a sensitive landscape could have long-term environmental consequences and disrupt the region’s ecological balance.

Development Should Not Ignore Natural Heritage

Dikshit argued that Uttarakhand’s identity is closely connected with its forests, natural landscapes and spiritual traditions. He said that infrastructure growth should not come at the cost of the state’s environmental heritage and cultural values.

He maintained that meaningful progress should include stronger investment in healthcare, education and sustainable employment opportunities alongside infrastructure projects. In his view, development policies should ensure that natural resources are preserved for future generations rather than being sacrificed for road expansion alone.

Reference to Historic Forest Conservation Movements

The former MP also recalled Uttarakhand’s long history of environmental activism. Referring to the Tilari massacre and the internationally recognised Chipko Movement, he said the state has previously demonstrated its commitment to protecting forests through public participation and sacrifice.

He questioned whether the present generation should remain silent while large numbers of trees are being cut, especially in a region known for its legacy of conservation efforts.

Questions Raised Over Budget Priorities

The letter also criticised what Dikshit described as the government’s spending priorities. He alleged that sectors such as healthcare, education and employment require greater financial attention, while significant resources are being directed toward projects that could reduce the state’s forest cover.

According to him, improving public services should remain a central focus alongside infrastructure development, ensuring that growth benefits local communities without causing irreversible environmental damage.

Appeal for Alternative Engineering Solutions

Dikshit urged the state government to consider modern engineering methods that would allow road expansion while preserving as many trees as possible. He said several citizens, students, environmental groups and social organisations have been calling for measures to protect the forests in the Saat Mod area.

He further stated that many residents believe development should not come at the expense of Uttarakhand’s natural wealth. Stressing the importance of environmental protection, he appealed to the government to explore technically viable alternatives that minimise ecological harm while meeting transportation needs.

The letter concludes with a request for immediate intervention to prevent further tree loss until sustainable solutions can be examined, highlighting the need to strike a balance between infrastructure development and environmental conservation.
