Democracy – Vice President Urges Lawmakers to Prioritise Constitutional Duty Over Electoral Success

Democracy –Vice President C P Radhakrishnan has said that the true measure of public life goes far beyond winning elections, stressing that elected representatives should remain committed to serving citizens while safeguarding the values of the Constitution.

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Wednesday emphasised that electoral success should never be considered the ultimate benchmark of political life. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Vidhayi Gaurav Yatra, organised to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, he said the primary responsibility of every elected representative is to work in the public interest while faithfully upholding constitutional principles. According to him, public trust is built through responsible governance and sincere service rather than repeated election victories.

Democracy Flourishes Through Open Discussion

Highlighting the foundations of India’s democratic system, the Vice President said healthy debate, constructive dialogue and consensus are essential for the effective functioning of democratic institutions. He observed that differences of opinion are natural in a democracy, but those differences should never weaken the collective commitment towards the Constitution and the welfare of the people. He noted that meaningful discussions help strengthen democratic traditions and improve governance.

State Legislatures Play a Vital Democratic Role

Describing state legislative assemblies as the driving force of Indian democracy, Radhakrishnan said these institutions serve as platforms where diverse viewpoints are presented and examined. He remarked that discussions, disagreements and even moments of disruption should eventually contribute to informed decision-making that benefits society. He added that lawmakers earn lasting respect through dedication, integrity and their contribution to public welfare instead of relying solely on electoral achievements.

Rajasthan’s History Reflects the Value of Every Contribution

Referring to Rajasthan’s rich historical heritage, the Vice President cited the enduring legacy of Maharana Pratap and his loyal horse, Chetak. He said history continues to remember both because every sincere contribution, whether large or small, leaves a meaningful impact. Through this example, he encouraged legislators to recognise that commitment, loyalty and selfless service create lasting memories in public life.

Recalling Associations With Rajasthan Leaders

During his address, Radhakrishnan also reflected on his long association with several prominent political leaders from Rajasthan. He recalled working alongside former Chief Ministers Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Vasundhara Raje during different phases of his political journey. He also acknowledged the contributions of former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and remembered his interactions with the late Rajesh Pilot while serving as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. These experiences, he said, offered valuable lessons in public service and leadership.

Call for Honest and Selfless Public Service

Encouraging legislators to discharge their responsibilities with honesty and dedication, the Vice President referred to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. He advised public representatives to remain focused on fulfilling their duties without being driven by expectations of personal gain or recognition. According to him, commitment to responsibility and ethical conduct should remain central to political life.

Appeal to Protect the Dignity of Legislative Institutions

Concluding his address, Radhakrishnan appealed to lawmakers to preserve the dignity and credibility of legislative institutions. He underlined the importance of maintaining respectful dialogue and constructive engagement inside legislative assemblies, saying such an approach strengthens democratic governance and reinforces public confidence in constitutional institutions.
